Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Card Verification: How to Check Payment Flows Without Real Cards

What Is Test Card Verification?

Test card verification is the practice of running a payment through a processor's sandbox with a card number that is reserved for testing. The number behaves like a real card inside your checkout code, but no bank authorization takes place and no money moves. Processors publish these numbers in their developer documentation, along with the exact response each one triggers.

Card Verification Test Site Guide: Where to Buy CVV

A test card is a placeholder that carries the same 16-digit format as a live card and passes the same Luhn check. It travels the same code path through your integration, from the payment form to your confirmation page. The point is control: live cards give you one outcome decided by a bank, while test cards give you every outcome on demand.

How Test Card Verification Works

A verification starts with a set of test API keys. When your server sends a payment request with those keys, the processor routes it to a sandbox that mimics the live API. The sandbox reads the card number and returns a scripted result: approval, decline, authentication challenge, or an error code tied to a specific failure.

card verification value test

  • Test keys: used with sandbox endpoints, never with live ones.
  • Card number: selects the scenario. Stripe, for example, lists 4242 4242 4242 4242 as a card that succeeds and 4000 0000 0000 0002 as one that declines.
  • Expiry and CVC: any future date and any three digits work in test mode.
  • Response: returned as a normal API object, so your error handling runs for real.

Because the sandbox returns standard API objects, your code cannot tell a test transaction from a live one. That is the whole benefit. You exercise your own logic, not the processor's.

Test Cards vs Live Cards

What a test card can do

  • Trigger approvals, declines, and 3D Secure challenges on command.
  • Produce webhooks, refunds, and disputes in most sandboxes.
  • Fill your database with transactions you can inspect and reset.

What a test card cannot do

  • Prove that your live merchant account is configured for a given card brand or region.
  • Confirm settlement timing or fee handling, since no funds move.
  • Validate your CVC or address rules against an issuer response, because sandboxes accept almost any value.

When Should You Run Test Card Verification?

Run it after any change that touches the payment path. Four moments matter most.

  1. A new gateway or processor goes into your checkout.
  2. You add a payment method, currency, or country.
  3. You change how your code handles declines, retries, or webhooks.
  4. You prepare a release that touches checkout, cart, or account pages.

Test cards belong in automated suites, but you should also click through the flow by hand at least once. Machines miss broken layouts and confusing copy.

How to Run a Test Card Verification, Step by Step

  1. Switch to your processor's test mode and copy the test API keys. Keep them in a separate environment file so they never reach production.
  2. Open your checkout in a staging build that uses those keys.
  3. Enter a test card number, a future expiry date, and any CVC.
  4. Submit the payment and read the response. Check your server logs and the processor's dashboard, not just the screen.
  5. Repeat for each scenario you must handle: success, generic decline, insufficient funds, expired card, and authentication required.
  6. Add those same scenarios to your automated suite so later changes cannot break them.

How Do You Test 3D Secure with Test Cards?

3D Secure adds an authentication step where the cardholder is challenged, and it is the part of checkout that breaks most often. Processors give you test cards that force a challenge, cards that pass without one, and cards that fail authentication. Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree each publish these groups, so check the current list before you build a script around a single number.

In a browser test, confirm three things: the challenge frame loads, your return URL brings the buyer back to the right page, and a failed authentication does not create a charge. Then repeat the flow on a mobile browser. The redirect path differs, and that is where bugs hide.

Mistakes That Break Test Card Verification

  • Mixed keys: test keys in production, or live keys in staging. Both break the flow in ways that look like gateway failures.
  • Test numbers on a live endpoint: the card network rejects the number, and repeated attempts can look like fraud to your acquirer.
  • Happy path only: teams test one approval, ship, then discover the decline page has no error message.
  • Real card data in a test database: PCI DSS treats test systems as in scope when they hold real account data. Keep test data fake.
  • Hard-coded numbers in shipped code: keep them in fixtures, not in your production files.
  • Skipped refunds and disputes: these paths touch money movement and deserve their own test cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a test card number?

A test card number is a digit sequence that a payment processor recognizes as a sandbox card. It follows the same format as a live card, so your form validation runs unchanged, but the processor answers from a script instead of a bank.

Can I use a test card on a real payment page?

No. A live endpoint sends the request to the card network, where a test number fails. The attempt gains you nothing and can flag your account for suspicious traffic.

Do test card verifications cost money?

No. Sandbox transactions never reach an issuer, so no funds move and no interchange fees apply. Confirm the terms with your processor if you plan heavy load testing.

Does test card verification check CVC or address rules?

Not fully. Most sandboxes accept any CVC and any postal code, so the test confirms that your form collects the data, not that your rules match an issuer. Use the specific decline codes your processor provides, then confirm with a small live transaction.

How often should you re-run test card verification?

Every time payment code changes, and at least once per release cycle. Re-run it when your processor announces API changes or new authentication rules, since those can alter the response your code receives.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
