Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

What Is a Verification Test Card? A Practical Guide

A verification test card is a card number published by a payment processor so you can test how a checkout handles card verification. It looks like a card number, passes the same format checks as one, and triggers predictable responses inside a sandbox. It is not tied to a bank account, a cardholder, or a balance. You get these numbers from processor documentation, not from anyone selling them.

What the card is actually verifying

Card verification covers a few separate checks, and test cards let you exercise each one. The CVV or CVC check confirms the three or four digit code matches what the issuer has on file. Address verification, usually called AVS, compares the billing street number and ZIP against issuer records. Then there is the strong customer authentication step, where 3-D Secure pushes a challenge to the cardholder.

A good test card set includes cases for each outcome. One number returns a successful authorization. Another declines for insufficient funds. Another triggers a CVV mismatch, and another forces a 3DS challenge you can pass or fail on demand. If your test data only covers approvals, you are not testing verification at all. You are testing the happy path and hoping the rest works.

Test cards versus real cards

The differences matter more than the similarities. A real card has an issuer, a credit limit, and a person who will dispute charges. A test card has none of that. It cannot move money, and it cannot be used on a live gateway. Processors build their sandboxes to reject test numbers outside test mode, which is exactly the point.

That also means nobody needs to buy a verification test card. The numbers are free, documented, and often printed right next to the API reference. If a site is selling something it calls a test card, it is either reselling free documentation or, more likely, selling real card data under a misleading label. Real card data used in a test environment is a compliance problem, not a shortcut.

Where test cards come from

Every major processor maintains a test card page in its developer docs. Stripe publishes fixed numbers that produce specific decline codes and 3DS outcomes. Adyen ships test cards alongside test 3DS credentials so you can walk through a challenge flow end to end. Visa and Mastercard publish test BINs for acquirer certification. If you are building against a gateway, start with that gateway's list before inventing your own.

Certification programs add another layer. Acquirers and processors run formal test suites with designated card ranges, and those ranges come from the card networks. Your integration may need to pass a network's test script before going live, and the script specifies which cards to use at each step.

Using them without creating problems

Keep test credentials and live credentials in separate environments, with separate API keys. Log which test card maps to which scenario so a failing test tells you something useful. And never paste production card numbers into a staging database to "make it realistic." PCI requirements exist for a reason, and test data is the safe substitute.

The verification logic you build around these cards is the part that ships. Test cards just let you prove it works before a real cardholder finds out it does not.
