Frontend CVV Input Test: Field Checks and Failure Cases

A frontend CVV input test checks four things: the field takes 3 or 4 digits and nothing else, the value clears after submit, the value never reaches logs or client storage, and the form blocks submit when the digit count is wrong. Everything else is detail.

Field setup that passes the test

Use type="text" with inputmode="numeric". Do not use type="number": it adds spinner controls, changes value on scroll, and drops leading zeros. Set maxlength="4" and autocomplete="cc-csc". The autocomplete token lets browsers and password managers fill the field and keeps the label machine-readable.

Test cases

  1. Type letters and symbols. The field keeps zero of them.
  2. Paste 12ab. Result is 12.
  3. Paste 12345. Result is capped at 4 characters.
  4. Submit with 2 digits. The form shows an error and sends no request.
  5. Submit with 3 digits on a Visa test card. The form sends the request.
  6. Complete a submit, then reload. The field is empty. No restore from sessionStorage or a form-state cache.
  7. Inspect the DOM after submit. The value attribute on the input is empty.
  8. Open DevTools Network, submit, and search the request and response bodies, the query string, and the analytics beacons for the CVV digits.
  9. Open the console and the error-monitoring queue. No CVV value in either.
  10. Trigger autofill from a saved card. The field fills and the masked display holds 4 characters.

Validation belongs on the server

Client checks are usability. They stop typos before a round trip. They do not verify a card. The processor or your backend does the real check. A client-only boundary is a bug, and a test suite that covers only the client is a gap.

Storage and logging limits

PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data. It must not be stored after authorization. A frontend test confirms this at the client edge: no CVV in localStorage, sessionStorage, cookies, hidden form fields, URL parameters, or error payloads sent to a monitoring vendor. Add a check for console.log calls left in the payment component and for redaction rules in your session-replay tool.

Error messages

Write error text that does not echo the input. Say "Enter the 3-digit code" instead of printing the entered value back. Screen readers announce the echoed value to anyone in earshot.
