Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Field Frontend Testing Checklist

The short answer

A CVV field passes frontend testing when it accepts the correct digit count for each card brand, rejects non-digits as typed, never stores or logs the value, exposes a proper label and error text to assistive tech, and survives paste, autofill, and backspace on every target browser. Test those items on the built artifact, not in a design review.

CVV Validation on Frontend: What It Checks and What It Does Not

Prerequisites

  • A staging build wired to a test-mode payment gateway.
  • Test card numbers for Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
  • A device matrix covering one iOS browser, one Android browser, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on desktop.
  • Devtools open on the Network, Console, and Application tabs.

1. Format and validation

  1. Enter a 3-digit value on a Visa test card. Confirm the field accepts it and the submit button enables.
  2. Enter a 4-digit value with an Amex test card. Confirm the field accepts four digits and the brand icon switches to Amex.
  3. Type letters and symbols. Confirm the field rejects them as typed, not just at submit.
  4. Enter 2 digits and submit. Confirm the error text names the CVV field and states the expected length.
  5. Enter 5 digits on a Visa card. Confirm the field caps input at 3 or shows a length error, and that the extra characters never reach the payload.
  6. Enter 000 and 999. Confirm the client does not reject these on its own; validity belongs to the gateway.

2. Input behavior

  1. Paste a 3-digit string. Confirm it lands and validates.
  2. Paste "123 456". Confirm the field strips the space or rejects the paste without breaking form state.
  3. Paste text with a leading space. Confirm the field trims it before length validation.
  4. Use browser autofill from a saved card. Confirm the browser fills cc-csc and the value passes validation.
  5. Press Backspace to empty the field. Confirm the field returns to a neutral state and clears the error text.
  6. Tab out with a partial value. Confirm blur validation fires once, not on every keystroke.
  7. Switch the card number from Visa to Amex after typing 3 digits. Confirm the field accepts a fourth digit or clears with a clear message.

3. Security checks in the browser

  1. Submit a test order with devtools open. Confirm the CVV appears in the request body over HTTPS and is absent from the URL and query string.
  2. Check the Console after submit. Confirm no log statement prints the field value.
  3. Open Application, then Local Storage, Session Storage, and Cookies. Confirm no key holds the CVV.
  4. Inspect analytics and tag manager payloads. Confirm no event sends the CVV or a hashed form of it.
  5. Confirm the input carries autocomplete="cc-csc" and not autocomplete="off" by itself.
  6. Confirm the field does not render the value in a tooltip, title attribute, or aria-describedby text.

4. Accessibility

  1. Confirm the input has a programmatic label, not a placeholder standing in for one.
  2. Run a screen reader through the form. Confirm it announces the security code field and reads the hint text.
  3. Trigger a validation error. Confirm the message is tied to the input through aria-describedby and announced on change.
  4. Confirm the error state is not conveyed by color alone.
  5. Confirm the field is reachable and operable with the keyboard, in DOM order.
  6. Check the touch target on mobile. Confirm the field meets the 44 by 44 CSS pixel minimum.

5. Visual and copy

  1. Confirm the help icon explains where the code is printed and the copy matches current card designs.
  2. Confirm field width and layout match the design at 320px, 768px, and 1280px.
  3. Confirm the CVV field sits in its own visual group if the design separates it from the card number.

6. Sign-off

Record each item as pass, fail, or not applicable with the browser and build number. A checklist that does not name the build cannot be reproduced. Re-run the full list after any change to the payment form, the gateway SDK, or the card brand detection logic.
