Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Verification at Checkout: How the Card Code Check Works

CVV verification at checkout is the step where a merchant passes the short card verification value printed on the card to the issuing bank during authorization. A matching code tells the issuer that whoever typed the card number had the physical card in hand at that moment. It is a possession check, not an identity check, and on its own it does not prove a transaction is safe to ship. The guide below covers what the check does, where it falls short, and which verification setup fits which kind of store.

How to Test CVV Checkout: A Comprehensive Guide

What happens during a CVV check

The customer enters the card number, expiration date, name, and verification code. The payment gateway builds an authorization request and routes it through the card network to the issuer. The issuer returns an approval or decline along with response codes such as CVV match, CVV mismatch, or CVV not processed. The gateway records the result and passes it to your order system.

CVV Test Orders: What They Are and How Merchants Block Them

A "not processed" response is worth reading carefully. It usually means the issuer does not support the check for that card, or the transaction stopped before reaching that step. It is not the same as a mismatch, and treating the two as identical creates false declines.

Checkout Card Verification Guide: How to Buy CVV

The verification values people mix up

  • Printed code: three digits on the back of most cards, four digits on the front of American Express cards. This is the value an online checkout asks for.
  • Stripe and chip value: encoded in the magnetic stripe or chip and read by a terminal in person. It is not printed and has no place in a web form.
  • Dynamic value: generated per transaction by a chip or a network token. It changes, so it cannot be collected and reused.

Only the printed value belongs in a checkout form. A field asking a customer to read stripe data from a card is a red flag on any storefront.

Where the check falls short

A mismatch is strong evidence of a problem. A match is weaker evidence of safety than most merchants assume. Issuers apply their own risk settings and may approve despite a mismatch. Bulk card data circulated online often includes the printed code, so a match proves nothing about intent. A household member can use a card with permission that was never given by the account holder. Stored-credential and subscription charges reuse an earlier agreement and skip code entry entirely.

Because of that, most fraud teams pair the code check with address verification, device signals, purchase velocity, and the distance between billing and shipping addresses.

Comparing checkout verification setups

Code check only

  • Pros: one extra field, no redirect, works with every card type, minimal checkout friction.
  • Cons: weakest signal on its own, no address check, easy for a fraudster to test numbers in bulk.

Code check plus address verification

  • Pros: two independent data points, catches billing address typos, useful for digital goods with instant delivery.
  • Cons: address verification is weak outside the US, Canada, and the UK, and it generates false declines on recent moves and corporate cards.

Code check plus 3-D Secure

  • Pros: the issuer authenticates the cardholder, liability shifts for eligible transactions, strong control for high-value orders.
  • Cons: added friction, an extra redirect or in-app step, and some customers abandon at that screen.

What the rules say about storing the code

PCI DSS classifies the printed verification value as sensitive authentication data. Merchants, gateways, and processors are not allowed to store it after authorization, even in encrypted form. That is why a checkout can remember a card number for next time but still asks for the code on every order. Any system that keeps the value in a database, an application log, a support ticket, or a screenshot is out of compliance and is a target.

What shoppers should expect

A legitimate checkout asks only for the printed code. It never requests full stripe data, a PIN, a photograph of the card, or the code sent by chat or email. A request that goes beyond the printed value is a reason to stop and check the site.

Recommendation by use case

  • Low-volume digital sales: code check plus address verification is enough to start, with a manual review trigger above a value you set.
  • Physical goods shipped to a different address: add manual review for orders that exceed your normal basket size or ship far from the billing address.
  • High-value, cross-border, or instant-delivery categories: enable 3-D Secure alongside the code and address checks, and accept that some customers will drop out.
  • Subscriptions: verify fully on the first charge, then rely on the stored agreement and monitor for changes in device or geography.

CVV verification is one control, not a verdict. Treat the result as a signal, combine it with the others, and never keep the code after the authorization is complete.
