Signals that separate a test order from a real customer

• Several cards tried from one IP or device fingerprint within minutes.
• Billing and shipping details that fail AVS while the CVV check passes.
• Order values clustered at the minimum, with no interest in shipping speed or product detail.
• Email addresses from throwaway domains, or a pattern like name plus four digits.
• Card BINs from issuers or regions that do not match the stated address.

Controls that stop card testing

1. Make CVV a required field and pass it to the issuer on every authorization. Never store the value after the response.
2. Enforce AVS rules and decline on a full mismatch for new customers.
3. Set velocity limits per card, per email, per device, and per IP.
4. Add 3-D Secure or a step-up challenge for traffic that trips risk rules.
5. Route high risk attempts to manual review and feed declines back into your fraud model.
