CVV Validation on Frontend: What It Checks and What It Does Not
Frontend CVV validation checks format and presence before submission. It cannot prove the code is correct; authorization and PCI-safe handling do that.
A CVV input masking frontend test verifies that a payment form accepts only 3 or 4 digits, renders the code so bystanders cannot read it, and never leaves the value in the DOM, in memory state, or in client storage. A complete test pairs unit coverage of the mask function with end-to-end checks on the rendered input's value, attributes, and accessibility behavior.
Most implementations treat the security code field as a controlled input. The mask filters non-numeric characters, caps the length, and optionally replaces digits with bullets after a short delay. Two goals sit behind that behavior. Character masking protects data integrity by keeping junk out of the payload. Visual masking protects the cardholder from someone reading the code over their shoulder. Test them as separate concerns, because they break for different reasons.
Keep the mask logic pure. Given a string and a set of options, it should return a filtered string plus a caret position, which means tests run without a browser. Use table-driven cases: empty input, one digit, four digits, five digits, an alphanumeric mix, unicode digits, leading zeros, and a paste containing whitespace. Assert caret placement after edits made in the middle of the value, since naive implementations jump the cursor to the end and break fast typists.
how to test cvv field in frontend
In a browser runner, type into the field and assert the resulting input.value, then check that the element exposes inputmode="numeric" and autocomplete="cc-csc" so mobile keyboards and password managers behave. On a validation error, assert aria-invalid is set and the message is linked through aria-describedby. Confirm the field is reachable by keyboard, that backspace works, and that a screen reader announces a meaningful label rather than the raw attribute name. A naming mismatch between the visible label and the accessible name is one of the most frequent defects in payment forms.
PCI DSS treats the card verification value as sensitive authentication data that must not be stored after authorization in any form. That rule turns into a concrete assertion: after the form submits, no network payload, storage key, DOM node, or log entry contains the code. Add that assertion to the same spec file as the mask tests so it runs on every pull request instead of surfacing during an audit.
