Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Frontend Validation Test Cases: Buyer's Guide

Buy coverage, not a regular expression. A CVV field that passes one happy-path test in Chrome is not validated, it is decorated. The right purchase is a test case set that exercises brand-specific digit lengths, non-digit input, paste and autofill behavior, mobile keyboard hints, error messaging that never echoes the value, and submit gating, and that you can re-run against your payment processor's sandbox before each release. If a suite or component library cannot show you those cases on paper before you pay, keep looking. Confirm your processor's rules first, because the acquirer's spec outranks any blog post, including this one.

What to look for in a CVV test case suite

  • Brand-aware length rules. Three digits for most brands, four for American Express. A suite that hardcodes three fails the moment you enable Amex.
  • Input element and keyboard hints. A text input with a numeric input mode, not a number input, since number inputs strip leading zeros and expose spinners.
  • Paste and autofill paths. Real shoppers paste from password managers and let the browser fill the card verification token. Tests that block paste hide a real conversion bug.
  • Masking and reveal behavior. The value should be hidden by default with an explicit reveal, and the masked state should survive a re-render.
  • Error copy that does not repeat the entered value. The message says what is wrong, not what was typed.
  • Accessibility hooks. A real label, a description tied to the field, and an error announced to screen readers.
  • Submit gating. The order button stays disabled or the request stays blocked until the field holds a valid value for the detected brand.

Parameter bands worth paying for

  • Case count: 25 to 40 cases for a single field is a practical floor. Under 15 and you will miss brand length and paste paths.
  • Digit lengths to cover: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 digits. Three-digit brands reject four, Amex requires four.
  • Character classes: letters, symbols, spaces, hyphens, leading and trailing whitespace, full-width digits, and mixed strings.
  • Strip versus reject: pick one policy for non-digit input and test both the typing path and the paste path against it.
  • Timing: validate on blur, on submit, and again on the server response. Frontend validation is a courtesy, not a control.
  • Browsers: at least one Chromium browser, Safari on iOS, and Firefox on desktop.

Pitfalls that waste the budget

  • Treating the CVV like a card number. There is no checksum to verify, so a Luhn pass on this field is meaningless.
  • Testing only the happy path and calling the field done.
  • Blocking paste to force manual entry. It annoys buyers and does not stop abuse.
  • Copying the same pattern on client and server and assuming the server side is now covered.
  • Logging the field value or writing it to an error tracker. Card verification data is not yours to keep.
  • Assuming three digits everywhere, then shipping an Amex checkout that rejects every card.
  • Testing in one desktop browser and calling the mobile keyboard path verified.

FAQ

How many test cases do I actually need?

Plan for roughly 25 to 40 for the field itself, split across valid lengths, invalid lengths, character classes, paste, autofill, masking and submit gating. That is enough to catch the failures that cost orders without turning the suite into a maintenance project.

cvv test frontend validation

Should the field always accept four digits?

Only when the brand calls for it. Detect the brand from the card number field and switch the expected length, then test both branches. Accepting four digits everywhere lets a typo through on a three-digit brand.

CVV Field Frontend Testing Checklist

Where should validation really live?

On the server, with the frontend as a usability layer. Duplicate the length and character rules on both sides and test them separately, because a shopper with a modified client can skip your frontend entirely.

CVV Frontend Validation Best Practices for Secure Purchases

Can we store the value for later use?

No. Card verification data is sensitive authentication data and must not be retained after authorization. Design your tests so the value never reaches a log, an analytics event or a support ticket.

Should we test with real card data?

Never. Use your payment processor's published sandbox values and synthetic inputs only. Real card details in a test environment are a compliance incident waiting to be filed.
