Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Frontend Validation Test Cases: QA Checklist

CVV frontend validation test cases verify that a card security code field accepts only digits, enforces the correct length for the detected card brand, and never exposes the value outside the payment form. A complete suite covers format rules, brand-specific lengths, paste and autofill behavior, error text, security handling, and accessibility. Frontend validation is a data hygiene step rather than a fraud check, because the real verification happens at the issuer through the payment processor.

What CVV validation covers and what it does not

The card security code is a 3 or 4 digit value printed on the card. It is not a card number, so the Luhn checksum does not apply and no mathematical rule can confirm the value is genuine. The frontend can only confirm shape: characters, length, and whether the field is empty. Everything else waits for the authorization response.

more on this topic

  • Covered on the frontend: character set, length, empty value, trimming, and brand-specific digit count.
  • Not covered on the frontend: whether the code matches the account, whether the card is open, or whether the bank will approve.
  • Never covered anywhere in your app: storing the code after authorization. PCI DSS prohibits retaining sensitive authentication data once a transaction is complete, so no test case should expect a stored CVV.

Core format and length test cases

Start with the field in isolation and a known card brand, then repeat while switching brands. Each row below belongs in its own test case with a clear expected result.

CVV Field Frontend Testing Checklist

  • Empty field submitted: blocked with a required message.
  • One digit, two digits: blocked as too short for every brand.
  • Exactly 3 digits: accepted for Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and most brands.
  • Exactly 4 digits: accepted for American Express, rejected for 3 digit brands.
  • Five or more digits: rejected, with no silent truncation that drops a real character.
  • Letters, symbols, and mixed input such as 12a: rejected rather than stripped into a valid-looking value.
  • Leading zero, such as 012 or 000: accepted by format validation. A leading zero is a legal code, so rejecting it is a bug.
  • Space, hyphen, or period inside the value: rejected or normalized, and the rule is documented either way.
  • Full-width or non-ASCII digit characters: rejected, since issuers use ASCII digits.

Brand-specific test cases

When the form detects the card brand from the card number, the digit requirement should follow it. Test the transition as well as the final state.

cvv validation on frontend

  • Enter an American Express number, confirm the label and max length switch to 4 digits.
  • Enter a Visa number, confirm the field caps at 3 digits.
  • Type a 4 digit value, then change the card number to a 3 digit brand. The field should flag the value instead of quietly keeping a digit the server will reject.
  • Enter an unrecognized brand and confirm a sensible default, usually 3 or 4 digits accepted.
  • Confirm the label text uses the brand name when known, such as the 4 digit code on the card, and a neutral label otherwise.

Input behavior test cases

Real users paste, autofill, and correct mistakes. These cases catch the bugs that format tests miss.

  • Paste a value with trailing whitespace and confirm it is trimmed before validation.
  • Paste a value longer than the maximum and confirm it is rejected or clipped at the boundary, not accepted whole.
  • Autofill from a password manager or browser wallet populates the field and triggers validation.
  • Mobile keyboard shows digits only through inputmode set to numeric.
  • Backspace and delete work correctly with any mask or spacing rule.
  • Cursor position stays predictable when a character is inserted mid-string.
  • Autocomplete attribute is set to the card security code token so browsers fill the right field.

Security and compliance test cases

These cases protect cardholders and keep the integration inside PCI DSS scope.

  • The value never appears in application logs, error reports, or analytics events.
  • The value is never placed in a URL, query string, or page title.
  • The field is submitted over HTTPS and, where the processor offers hosted fields or tokenization, the raw value never touches your own JavaScript.
  • The value is not written to local storage, session storage, or a cookie.
  • Masking matches the risk model: either the digits stay visible on screen only, or the field masks while keeping the real value intact for submission.
  • Copy and paste blocking, if used at all, does not break password managers or autofill.

Accessibility and error message test cases

  • The field has a programmatic label and a hint tied through aria-describedby.
  • Errors are announced to screen readers and do not rely on color alone.
  • Error text states what is wrong without repeating the entered value.
  • Validation fires at a reasonable moment, on blur or submit, instead of on every keystroke.
  • The whole flow is completable with a keyboard only.

How to structure the test run

Keep the suite table-driven so each row is a single input, brand, and expected result. Use sandbox test card numbers from your payment processor rather than live card data, and never store real card security codes in a fixture file. Run the format and behavior cases on every change to the field, and run the security cases before each release. Pair the frontend suite with a server-side test that confirms the value is rejected when it arrives malformed, because client validation can always be bypassed.
