CVV Validation on Frontend: What It Checks and What It Does Not
Frontend CVV validation checks format and presence before submission. It cannot prove the code is correct; authorization and PCI-safe handling do that.
The CVV field on a payment form is small, but it carries a lot of weight. It is the one value you are never allowed to store, and the one value you cannot truly validate on the client. Every frontend test scenario for CVV comes back to those two facts. Everything else, the input masking, the numeric keyboard, autofill, the error copy, exists to move a clean 3 or 4 digit value to the payment processor without leaving a copy behind.

Here is the set of scenarios I run through on checkout forms, grouped by what each one actually protects.
Start with the shape of the input. Card brands differ, and the field has to accept both without guessing wrong.
Client side rules can only check shape, never correctness. A value of "000" is a valid CSC format even though no issuer would send one, so a frontend that flags it as invalid is lying to the customer. Keep the line clear: format validation in the browser, authenticity with the processor.
This is where CVV testing differs from testing any other input. PCI DSS treats the code as sensitive authentication data, which means it must not be retained after authorization. That puts a handful of concrete assertions in your suite.
If you use hosted fields from a processor, most of these scenarios run inside a cross-origin iframe. You can still test them from the outside. Check focus order, check that errors raised inside the iframe reach your own error region, check that the submit button stays disabled until every hosted field reports valid, and check what happens when the iframe fails to load. You will not be able to inspect the input element itself, and that is by design.
Manual first, on a real phone and a real desktop browser, because autofill and the numeric keypad are where most defects show up. Then I automate the deterministic parts (empty, short, non-numeric, paste, overlong) in Playwright or Cypress against a sandboxed processor. Sandbox test cards from the provider are the only card data that should ever touch a test environment. If a scenario requires a live card number, that scenario does not belong in the suite.
