Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Fraud Test: What It Is and How Merchants Block It

A CVV fraud test is a low-value charge run against a stolen card number to check whether the card still authorizes and whether the CVV code on file matches. The CVV is the 3-digit code on the back of most cards, or the 4-digit code on the front of an American Express card, and it is the piece criminals cannot guess from a card number alone. Merchants see these attempts as bursts of tiny orders, often across many different cards in a short window.

Best Card Fraud Detection Tools for Secure Transactions

What is a CVV fraud test?

A CVV fraud test is one step inside a larger practice called card testing, or carding. The goal is sorting working numbers from dead ones. A card that passes a test gets used again for larger purchases, or sold to another buyer as a "verified" number.

Test charges tend to be small because the risk is smaller. If the transaction is declined or flagged, little is lost. If it clears, the seller knows the number is live.

What does card testing look like from the merchant side?

Single orders rarely give it away. The pattern across many orders does.

more on this topic

  • Many orders placed in a narrow window, often at night.
  • Small totals, sometimes a dollar or less, with near-identical amounts repeated.
  • Several different card numbers coming from one IP address or device.
  • Billing addresses that do not match the card issuer's records.
  • A sudden rise in declines, CVV mismatch responses, and address verification failures.
  • Digital goods, gift cards, or items that ship fast and resell fast.

Why the damage goes past the stolen amount

A single small fraud order costs a merchant the product plus a chargeback fee, which often runs higher than the order itself. Enough of them and the processor raises fees, holds funds, or closes the account. Some card networks also levy fines on merchants with high fraud ratios.

There is an operational cost too. A flood of fake orders buries real ones, spikes customer service tickets, and burns inventory. High-risk merchants lose the ability to accept certain card types at all.

How do fraud teams detect a CVV fraud test?

Detection comes from signals that stack, not from a single red flag. A legitimate customer can look odd once. A card tester looks odd the same way across dozens of orders.

  • Velocity checks: how many attempts one card, IP, device, or email makes per hour.
  • AVS and CVV responses: repeated mismatch codes under one merchant account.
  • Device and IP reputation: traffic from data centers, proxies, or known fraud ranges.
  • BIN geography: card issuers in countries that do not match the buyer's location.
  • 3D Secure results: authentication attempts that fail or get abandoned at the same step.
  • Order behavior: the same item quantity bought again and again with no browsing history.

How do you stop card testing on a checkout page?

Most blocks are simple controls that make testing expensive and slow. Layer them so no single control carries the whole load.

  1. Set velocity limits per card, IP, device, and email. Cap attempts per hour, not just per day.
  2. Require the CVV and full street address on every order, and decline on mismatch instead of reviewing.
  3. Turn on 3D Secure for high-risk regions and high-risk product categories.
  4. Block traffic from hosting providers, VPN ranges, and countries you do not sell to.
  5. Add a bot check or CAPTCHA on the payment step, not just on account creation.
  6. Flag and hold the first order from any new device that buys three or more distinct cards.
  7. Review decline data each week with your processor so you catch a new wave early.

What should you do if your card was tested?

A small charge you do not recognize, or a pending authorization that disappears, is a common sign. Acting fast limits what comes next.

  1. Check your statement and app for charges under a few dollars, including pending ones.
  2. Call the number on the back of your card and report the charge as unauthorized.
  3. Ask for a replacement card with a new number, since the old one is now in circulation.
  4. Change passwords on shopping accounts that stored the card, and turn on two-factor login.
  5. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov if more than one card or account is affected.

Is buying or selling card numbers legal?

No. In the United States, trafficking in stolen card numbers and access devices falls under federal fraud statutes, and convictions carry prison time and fines. Possessing or selling card data you do not own is a crime regardless of where the shop sits online.

FAQ

Is a CVV fraud test the same as carding?

Carding is the umbrella term for using stolen card data. A CVV test is the verification step inside it, used to separate working numbers from dead ones before a bigger purchase.

Does a one-dollar charge mean my card was tested?

Sometimes. Small charges from unfamiliar merchants are worth a call to your issuer, but subscription trials and gas station holds also produce small authorizations that drop off.

Can a merchant store my CVV after a purchase?

No. PCI DSS rules forbid keeping the CVV, or any authentication data, after a transaction is authorized. A merchant that stores CVV codes on a server is out of compliance.

Does 3D Secure stop card testing?

It reduces it. A tester who cannot pass the bank's authentication step gets blocked, but attackers still probe merchants that have 3D Secure turned off for some card types or regions.

Why do card testers target small merchants first?

Small shops often run basic gateways with weak velocity rules, so a test charge is more likely to clear. Larger retailers tend to have fraud scoring that catches the pattern on the first few attempts.
