Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Fraud Detection Software: Buyer's Guide

Credit card fraud detection software scores card transactions as they happen, combining rules, machine learning models, and behavioral signals to flag likely fraud before the transaction settles. It sits between the moment a card is authorized and the moment funds move, and its job is to separate genuine customers from stolen-card attempts, account takeover, and friendly fraud without blocking legitimate sales.

What the software actually does

Most products in this category share a common core, even when the marketing language differs. Expect the following functions:

  • Real-time scoring. Each authorization request gets a risk score in milliseconds, usually with a threshold that routes the transaction to approve, review, or decline.
  • A rules engine. Business rules catch known patterns: mismatched billing country, repeated declines on the same card, unusual order values, shipping address changes made minutes before checkout.
  • Machine learning models. Supervised models train on historical transactions labeled by chargebacks and confirmed fraud, then rank new activity against those patterns.
  • Device and behavioral signals. Device fingerprinting, IP reputation, typing cadence, and session behavior help identify automation, emulators, and account takeover.
  • Case management. Analysts need a queue, evidence, notes, and an audit trail for each alert they review.
  • A feedback loop. Confirmed fraud and chargeback outcomes should flow back into the model and rules so detection improves over time.

How detection works in practice

At authorization, the system receives a bundle of data: card number characteristics, the address verification result, the CVV verification response, the merchant category, the amount, the time, and the channel. It adds what it can observe about the device and the customer's history. The model converts that bundle into a score, and the rules layer can override the score when a hard condition is met.

Card verification tools handle the simpler half of the problem. Address Verification System checks and CVV checks confirm that the person submitting the order knows details printed on or tied to the card. They are cheap, fast, and easy to defeat with leaked data, which is why they work best as inputs to a broader model rather than as the whole strategy. Strong Customer Authentication flows, such as 3-D Secure, shift liability in some circumstances but add friction, so many merchants apply them selectively to high-risk transactions.

Machine learning handles the harder half. Velocity features, merchant-level Baselines, peer-group comparisons, and sequence patterns catch fraud that no single rule describes. Consortium data, where available, extends the view beyond one merchant's history.

Issuer-side, merchant-side, and platform tools

The market splits into three broad segments, and the right choice depends on where you sit.

  • Issuer and processor platforms score transactions across an entire card portfolio, with access to account history and authorization streams that merchants never see.
  • Merchant fraud tools plug into ecommerce checkout and order management systems, focused on chargeback reduction, manual review efficiency, and approval rate.
  • Payment service provider modules bundle basic fraud screening with gateway services. They are convenient for small volumes and often too rigid at scale.

Features worth paying for

  1. Configurable decision thresholds by channel, country, and product line.
  2. Model explainability, so analysts can see which signals drove a score.
  3. Custom rules without vendor professional services for every change.
  4. Chargeback and dispute data ingestion, including reason codes.
  5. Sandbox testing and shadow mode, so you can run new models without affecting live approvals.
  6. API latency documented and guaranteed, not just described as fast.
  7. Role-based access, retention controls, and exportable audit logs.

Metrics that matter

Ask vendors for detection rate at a fixed false positive rate, not a single headline accuracy figure. Accuracy is misleading on imbalanced data, where fraud is a tiny fraction of transactions. Request the precision and recall tradeoff, the review queue volume the system generates per thousand orders, and the average decision latency. Then measure your own approval rate and chargeback ratio before and after deployment.

Compliance and data handling

Any system that touches cardholder data falls inside PCI DSS scope, so confirm whether the vendor tokenizes card numbers or stores them, and how that changes your own assessment. Check data residency, retention limits, subprocessors, and whether transaction data is used to train models shared with other clients. Model governance matters too: versioning, retraining cadence, and documented validation are increasingly expected by regulators and auditors.

Before you buy

  • Map your current fraud losses, chargeback ratio, and manual review cost.
  • Decide whether you need a full platform or a scoring layer that plugs into existing systems.
  • Run a pilot on historical data and compare results against your current rules.
  • Confirm integration effort in engineering hours, not marketing claims.
  • Negotiate exit terms covering data export and model artifacts.

Good credit card fraud detection software reduces losses and manual review load at the same time. If a vendor can only promise one of those, keep looking.
