Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Fraud Test: Legitimate Ways to Test Fraud Controls

A credit card fraud test means one of two things: a merchant checking that its fraud controls actually stop stolen-card activity, or an attacker pushing stolen numbers through a checkout to see which ones still work. Only the first is legal, and the two leave different fingerprints. For merchants, the top pick is a network sandbox run with published test card numbers, backed by a small live canary using cards your own company issued. The criteria that matter: does it surface card-testing behavior, does it keep false declines low, can you repeat it before every release, and does it keep you inside PCI DSS scope.

Best Card Fraud Detection Tools for Secure Transactions

What the term covers

A fraud test on the merchant side is a controlled exercise. You send known-good, known-bad, and deliberately suspicious transactions through your payment stack and check that the rules engine, the 3-D Secure step-up logic, and the manual review queue respond the way your policy says they should. On the attacker side, the same phrase describes card testing: scripted attempts against a checkout page to find live account numbers before reselling them or cashing them out with gift cards and digital goods.

Credit Card Fraud Detection Software: A Buyer's Guide

If you are looking for somewhere to buy CVVs, that is not a test and there is no legitimate version of it. Buying, selling, or possessing stolen account numbers is a federal crime in the US under 18 U.S.C. 1029, and the card networks treat it as fraud regardless of jurisdiction.

Why card testing attacks are worth testing for

Card testing shows up as a burst of low-value authorizations, often under a dollar, run against sequential or clustered bank identification numbers. Expect disposable email addresses, mismatched billing and IP geolocation, a high decline rate followed by a cluster of approvals, and velocity that no human shopper produces. The damage is not the stolen goods. It is chargeback volume, network monitoring fees, and a merchant account flagged for fraud. Catching the pattern is the point of the test.

Option 1: Network sandbox with published test card numbers

Every major processor publishes test account numbers that only behave inside a sandbox. They trigger specific response codes: approved, declined, expired, incorrect CVV, 3-D Secure required. You can drive thousands of scenarios without touching live money.

  • Pros: No real cardholder data, so no PCI scope expansion. Repeatable in CI. Covers response-code handling and step-up logic well. Safe to run against staging.
  • Cons: Sandbox numbers carry no real issuer behavior. Your rules engine may not see realistic velocity or device fingerprint signals. It cannot validate your chargeback workflow.
  • Use case: The default for release testing and for any team without a dedicated fraud analyst.

Option 2: Live canary with cards your company issued

Run a small volume of real transactions on corporate cards, including one card you have deliberately reported lost and one with a low limit set by the issuer. This is the only way to see how issuer declines, AVS mismatches, and step-up challenges behave in production.

  • Pros: Real issuer responses. Exposes gaps between your rules and the network's. Small enough to keep losses at zero when you use your own cards.
  • Cons: Requires internal approval and clean bookkeeping. Volume is too low to prove statistical lift. Easy to misfile as a real customer dispute if nobody tags it.
  • Use case: Pre-launch validation of a new payment provider, a new country, or a new 3-D Secure configuration.

Option 3: Rules replay against historical authorization data

Pull a year of settled and declined authorizations, label the confirmed fraud, and replay the traffic against a proposed rule set. This measures what a change would have caught and what it would have declined by mistake.

  • Pros: Real population, real seasonality. Lets you tune thresholds before they touch a customer. Shows false-decline cost next to fraud savings.
  • Cons: Labeled fraud data is incomplete because most fraud is confirmed weeks later through chargebacks. Stored data must stay inside PCI DSS controls, and the card verification code cannot be part of it.
  • Use case: Quarterly tuning of velocity limits, amount thresholds, and review-queue cutoffs.

What a proper test never involves

No legitimate test needs a purchased CVV, a card generator, or a checker site. PCI DSS forbids retaining the card verification code after authorization, so any vendor offering to verify CVVs against live accounts is describing fraud, not testing. Build the exercise from sandbox numbers, your own issued cards, and historical data you already hold under a compliant agreement. That combination catches card testing, keeps false declines measurable, and survives an audit.
