Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Fraud Detection Test: How to Run One

Short answer

A credit card fraud detection test is a controlled exercise where you push known-safe and known-risky payment attempts through your own checkout, gateway, and risk engine, then confirm each attempt lands in the decision bucket you predicted. You run it in a processor sandbox with published test card numbers, or in production with cards you own and written permission from every party in the chain. The purpose is measurement: you want to know which rules fire, which rules stay silent, and how long the decision takes.

This is not a way to probe someone else's storefront or to learn what a live fraud system misses. Testing against systems you do not control is unauthorized access, and it is treated that way.

cvv fraud test

Prerequisites

  • Written authorization from your acquirer, gateway, and processor for the test scope, plus permission from any cardholder whose live card you use.
  • Sandbox credentials that mirror your production risk configuration, including blocklists, velocity rules, and 3D Secure settings.
  • The processor's published test card list, which includes decline, insufficient funds, expired card, and CVC mismatch samples.
  • A written pass or fail definition for each scenario before you send the first authorization.

Steps

  1. Define the scenario table in a document: one row per fraud vector, one column for the decision you expect and one for the rule you expect to trigger.
  2. Confirm your sandbox and production risk profiles are identical, so sandbox results carry over.
  3. Load the processor's test card numbers into your test data set and label each one with the failure it represents.
  4. Send a baseline transaction with a fully clean profile to verify the pipeline records the attempt and the decision.
  5. Send one fraud vector at a time, changing a single variable per run so attribution stays clean.
  6. Record four fields for every attempt: decision, rule or model identifier, risk score, and decision latency.
  7. Compare recorded decisions against the scenario table and mark each row pass or fail.
  8. Fix the gaps, then re-run the full table as a regression suite before the next production release.
  9. Wipe or segregate the test data set if any live account data entered the environment.

Test vectors worth covering

Card testing bursts

Many small authorizations from one device or IP in a short window. Your velocity rules should catch the burst, not the first attempt.

Identity and geography mismatch

Billing country, IP country, and shipping country that do not align. Expect a step-up challenge rather than an outright block in most configurations.

card verification fraud test

Amount and velocity anomalies

Amounts far above the customer's history, repeated attempts after a decline, and multiple cards on one account.

Address and code verification failures

AVS and CVV mismatch combinations, including the mismatch that issuers decline without a fraud rule ever firing.

Metrics to record

  • Detection rate per vector, meaning the share of risky attempts your system flagged.
  • False positive rate on the clean baseline traffic.
  • Precision, the share of flagged attempts that were genuinely risky in the test set.
  • Decision latency at the median and at the 95th percentile.
  • Rule hit attribution, so you know which control did the work.
  • Chargeback ratio trend after release, which is the only outcome measure that matters over time.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Changing two variables in one run, which makes the result unusable.
  • Assuming an issuer decline means your engine caught fraud. Issuer declines come from the bank, not from your rules.
  • Using live card numbers in a sandbox environment. That violates card data handling requirements.
  • Declaring success from a low false positive rate while detection stays weak.
  • Running the suite once and never again after rule or model changes.
