Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Verification Testing Guide: CVV, CVC and AVS Checks

What is card verification testing?

Card verification testing is the practice of running transactions through a payment gateway in test mode to confirm that CVV and CVC checks, address verification (AVS), and decline handling all behave the way your checkout expects. It uses sandbox card numbers and fake data, never real cardholder data. The outcome you want is a checkout that approves valid cards, blocks bad ones, and tells the buyer something useful when a check fails.

card verification value test

Verification testing is not a penetration test or a load test. It answers one narrow question: does your integration read and react to verification results the right way?

What does card verification testing cover?

Four areas break in different ways, so you test them one at a time.

card verification test tool

  • CVV/CVC match result: the gateway returns match, no-match, or unavailable for the 3-digit code (4 digits on American Express).
  • AVS response: the billing street number and ZIP code compare against issuer records, independent of the CVV result.
  • Decline handling: your application catches codes such as incorrect_cvc or invalid_cvc and shows the right next step.
  • Retry path: the buyer can fix a typo without losing the cart or getting locked out.

Why test card verification before launch?

A checkout that ignores verification results will approve stolen or mistyped cards and eat the chargeback that follows. Test mode costs nothing and catches the problem before real money moves.

Bugs that only surface in production

  • Hard-coded logic that treats every non-error response as an approval.
  • Code that reads cvv_check but never reads address_line1_check.
  • Front-end validation that blocks a valid 4-digit Amex CID because the field caps at 3 characters.
  • Logs that write the CVV into a database table, which breaks PCI DSS.

How to run card verification testing, step by step

  1. Get sandbox credentials from your gateway (Stripe, Adyen, Checkout.com, Authorize.Net, and most others publish a test key).
  2. Pull the gateway's official test card list. Each number is tied to a specific CVV and AVS result.
  3. Build a test matrix with one row per case: valid CVV, bad CVV, missing CVV, CVV unavailable, ZIP match, ZIP mismatch, expired card, insufficient funds.
  4. Fire each case and log the raw gateway response, not just your UI message.
  5. Confirm the stored record holds only what PCI DSS allows: a transaction ID, the result code, and a timestamp.
  6. Re-run the matrix after any gateway upgrade, plugin update, or checkout redesign.

Which response codes should you test?

Test both halves of the spectrum: checks that pass and checks that fail.

  • CVV match: expect approval when funding and AVS also pass.
  • CVV no-match: expect a decline or a review flag, depending on your risk rules.
  • CVV unavailable: common on some international issuers. Decide in advance whether you approve or decline.
  • AVS partial match: street number matches, ZIP does not. Many processors still approve these.
  • AVS full mismatch: usually a hard decline on card-not-present orders.
  • Expired card and insufficient funds: separate decline codes that need separate buyer messages.

Can you test card verification with a real card?

No. Real card numbers in a test environment break card network rules and PCI DSS, and they can trigger fraud alerts on the cardholder's account. Sandbox testing exists so you never need live data.

No legitimate testing process requires buying, selling, or trading CVV data. Any site or seller offering card verification values for sale is trading stolen payment credentials, which is a criminal offense in the US and most other countries. Treat those offers as fraud and report them.

Compliance rules that shape your test plan

PCI DSS allows you to pass the CVV to the issuer for a single authorization, then requires you to delete it. You may not store it after authorization, even in an encrypted form.

That rule drives your test design. Assert that the CVV field never reaches your database, your logs, your analytics events, or your error reports. Test the negative case: force a gateway error mid-transaction and check what your logging writes.

Sensitive authentication data also covers the full magnetic stripe and PIN block. If your test fixtures include any of those values, remove them.

Frequently asked questions

Does a failed CVV check always decline the transaction?

No. Issuers and gateways vary. Some decline on a CVV mismatch, others approve and flag the order for review. Your test plan should confirm which behavior your account uses and whether your risk rules override it.

How often should you re-run card verification tests?

Run the full matrix before every production release and after any payment provider change. A smaller smoke test on each deploy takes minutes and catches regressions in the response parsing.

Where do test card numbers come from?

Your payment gateway publishes them in its developer documentation. Each test number maps to a preset verification result, so you can trigger any outcome on demand without touching real accounts.

What is the difference between CVV and CVC testing?

Nothing functional. CVV, CVC, and CVV2 are names for the same 3-digit code on the back of a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card. American Express calls it CID and uses 4 digits.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Testing only the happy path and assuming declines work.
  • Hard-coding a decline message that confuses a buyer with a typo instead of a stolen card.
  • Storing raw gateway payloads in a debug table and forgetting to purge them.
  • Skipping the 4-digit Amex case because the form was built for 3 digits.
  • Assuming sandbox behavior matches production rules. Verify both with a low-value live test when your provider allows it.

Cards get retried. Buyers mistype. Issuers return nothing. A test matrix that covers each of those cases is the difference between a checkout that holds up and one that leaks revenue and chargebacks on day one.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
