Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

What Is a CVV Test Transaction? Card Testing Explained

A CVV test transaction is a payment authorization run to check whether a card number, expiration date, and card verification value work together. Payment teams run them in test mode to validate a checkout integration before going live. Fraudsters run the same request against live accounts to confirm that stolen card data still works before cashing out. Both activities get called "card testing," and only one of them is legal.

Test mode versus live card testing

In test mode nothing real is charged. Processors issue placeholder card numbers that return a fixed approve or decline response, so a developer can confirm that a form transmits the CVV field, that the gateway maps it to the correct parameter, and that a decline shows the right message to the shopper.

Card testing points that same request at live card data. Someone runs a burst of small authorizations across many card numbers, keeps the ones that approve, and drops the rest. The pattern is the giveaway: many cards, one merchant, tiny amounts, odd hours, and a spike in declines.

Option 1: Sandbox and test-mode authorizations

This is the intended way to test a CVV flow. You use issuer-approved test numbers, you never touch a real account, and the results are repeatable.

  • Pros: no real cardholder is involved, no funds move, you can force any response code you need, and you can rerun the same case as often as you want.
  • Pros: safe for CI pipelines and staging environments, so integration bugs surface before launch.
  • Cons: test numbers bypass real issuer behavior such as 3D Secure challenges, AVS mismatches, and risk scoring, so a passing test does not prove a live card will approve.
  • Cons: sandbox credentials can leak into production configs if nobody audits environment variables.

Use this when you are building or changing a checkout, a subscription signup, or a stored-credential flow. It is the right default for every pre-launch check.

Option 2: A small live authorization to verify a cardholder

Some businesses place a temporary hold or a small real charge, often under a dollar, to confirm a card is valid before granting access to a service. This is legitimate when the cardholder agreed to it and the terms are disclosed.

  • Pros: confirms the account is open, the CVV matches, and the cardholder controls the card.
  • Pros: supports account verification for trials, bookings, and deposits.
  • Cons: authorization holds annoy customers, and card network rules limit how you may use them.
  • Cons: each attempt costs an authorization fee and adds to your decline ratio, which processors watch.
  • Cons: a valid card does not prove the person is the account owner. Verification holds and identity checks answer different questions.

Use this only where a network rule or your acquirer permits it, and always with clear disclosure at the point of entry.

Card testing with card data you do not own

This is fraud, and it is prosecuted under computer fraud, access device, and identity theft statutes. It also leaves a long trail. Gateways log the IP, device fingerprint, timing, and amount of every attempt. Issuers see the same card number probed across unrelated merchants. Processors flag the merchant account receiving the traffic, which means the operator of the storefront can lose the ability to accept cards at all. Card data bought from a marketplace is often already burned, already reported, or planted by law enforcement, so the "test" result carries no real value.

How merchants detect and block card testing

  1. Watch for volume spikes of low-value authorizations, especially at night or from one IP range.
  2. Rate limit attempts per session, per card fingerprint, and per device.
  3. Require the CVV and the billing address to match, and treat repeated CVV failures as a risk signal.
  4. Enable the fraud rules your processor ships, and tune thresholds instead of leaving defaults.
  5. Send failed attempts to a manual review queue when the same email or phone appears across many cards.
  6. Never store the CVV after authorization. That is a PCI DSS requirement, and storing it turns a fraud incident into a compliance breach.

Why this guide does not cover buying CVV data

Selling or buying card verification values is a crime in the United States and most other jurisdictions. There is no legitimate vendor, no warranty, and no recourse when the data fails. People who genuinely need test card numbers can get them at no cost from their payment processor's developer documentation, along with the expected response codes for each scenario. That is the only source worth using.
