UI CVV test: what it checks

A UI CVV test verifies the card security code field on a checkout form. It checks input rules, formatting, autofill behavior, and error messages. It does not check the code against an issuer. Only the payment processor can do that.

The CVV is 3 digits on Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards. It is 4 digits on American Express. The field sits on the card, apart from the number and the expiry date.

CVV UI Testing: A Comprehensive Guide

Test cases

  • Digit count: 3 digits accepted for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. 4 digits accepted for Amex.
  • Non-numeric input: letters, spaces, hyphens, and symbols rejected or stripped.
  • Empty field: form blocks submit and shows an error next to the field.
  • Leading zeros: "007" stays "007". No integer conversion.
  • Paste and autofill: browser fills the field, including Amex 4-digit values.
  • Keyboard: numeric keypad on mobile through inputmode="numeric".
  • Logging: the value never reaches logs, analytics, or crash reports.

Sandbox numbers

Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree publish test card numbers for sandbox mode. Stripe test card 4242 4242 4242 4242 accepts any 3-digit CVV and any future expiry date. Sandbox traffic never touches a real account. Live card data must go straight to the processor. It must not pass through your own server.

Rules that apply

PCI DSS Requirement 3.2.1 bans storage of the CVV after authorization, in any form. Rendering and validation happen in the browser or in the processor's hosted field. A form that posts the CVV to your own backend adds scope to your audit.

Luhn checks apply to the card number. They do not apply to the CVV. A Luhn pass on the number says nothing about the security code.

Buying card data

Sellers that advertise CVV data for sale are selling stolen payment credentials. Buying, selling, or using them is fraud under 18 U.S.C. 1029 in the US. Test data from a processor sandbox is the legal path for UI work.
