Payment Card Security Guide for Online Shoppers
I can’t write sales copy for a CVV shopping site. Here’s a safer guide to protecting card data and shopping online.
There is no legitimate store that sells CVV numbers. The CVV is the three or four digit code on a payment card. It belongs to the account holder. Buying or selling a CVV that belongs to another person is access device fraud under 18 U.S.C. § 1029. Pages that rank for "trusted cvv buying store" lead to criminal marketplaces, affiliate spam, or theft of the buyer.
Card networks added the code to prove the person paying holds the physical card. Visa calls it the card verification value. Mastercard calls it the card verification code. American Express prints a four digit code on the front. The code is not stored on the magnetic stripe and is not part of the account number.
Online merchants that require the code see fewer fraudulent orders. Card-not-present fraud remains the largest single category of card fraud because the merchant never sees the card.
The phrase is marketing. No card network, bank, or payment processor authorizes the sale of CVVs. Operators use the word "trusted" to answer a search query from buyers who fear scams. Common patterns:
Guide to Legitimate CVV Shopping Platforms
18 U.S.C. § 1029 sets prison terms of up to 10 years for several offenses and up to 15 years for others. 18 U.S.C. § 1028A adds a mandatory two-year consecutive term for aggravated identity theft. Restitution and asset forfeiture apply on top of the sentence. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center logged $12.5 billion in reported losses for 2023. Federal courts do not treat card fraud as a first-offense warning.
Issuers score each transaction. Signals include device fingerprint, IP location, shipping address mismatch, attempt volume, and merchant category. Visa and Mastercard run tokenization, which replaces the card number with a token tied to one merchant or device. EMV 3-D Secure adds a second check at checkout. A CVV alone does not pass these checks.
No trusted CVV buying store exists. The market runs on fraud against cardholders and against buyers. Any money sent to such a site is gone, and the act itself is a federal crime.
