Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Transaction Card: Safe Payment Testing Guide

What Is a Test Transaction Card?

A test transaction card is a fake card number issued by a payment processor for sandbox use. It carries no bank account, no credit line, and no cardholder. Developers use one to check that a checkout form, payment API, and billing logic work before real money is involved.

Test cards exist because live cards are hard to test with. You cannot run 50 declined charges on a real account, and you should not paste a real number into a staging server.

How Do Test Transaction Cards Work?

Test cards pass the same format checks as live cards, then route to a simulation engine instead of a bank. The processor reads the digits and returns a scripted result, such as an approval, a decline, or an authentication challenge.

What the Sandbox Checks

  • Luhn check on the card number
  • Expiry format and whether the date sits in the future
  • CVV length (3 digits for Visa and Mastercard, 4 for American Express)
  • Whether the number maps to a specific test scenario

Most gateways ignore the CVV value itself and accept any digits of the right length. A few let you pin a fixed CVV in the dashboard so your test scripts stay consistent.

Where Do Test Card Numbers Come From?

Every major processor publishes its own list, and the numbers differ from one gateway to the next. Pull your list from the docs of the processor you integrated, not from a random blog post.

Processor Documentation

Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, Square, and Braintree all keep a test card page inside their developer docs. Those pages also explain which number triggers which response code.

Third-Party Lists

Some open-source tools collect test numbers from many gateways in one place. Treat those lists as a starting point, then confirm each entry against the official docs.

Which Test Card Numbers Do Developers Use Most?

The numbers below are public and appear in processor documentation. Behavior can differ between gateways, so confirm each one in your own docs before you build a suite around it.

  • 4242 4242 4242 4242: Visa, approves in most sandboxes
  • 4000 0000 0000 0002: generic decline
  • 4000 0025 0000 3155: triggers 3D Secure authentication
  • 5555 5555 5555 4444: Mastercard approval
  • 3782 822463 10005: American Express, 4-digit CVV
  • 6011 1111 1111 1117: Discover approval

What CVV and Expiry Should You Enter?

Use any three digits (four for Amex) and a future expiry date, such as 12/34. The sandbox validates the format, not the value, so 123 and 999 both pass. If your gateway returns a CVV mismatch error, check its docs for the exact digits it expects.

Why Real Card Data Does Not Belong in a Test Environment

Pasting a live card number into a sandbox puts your team in PCI DSS scope and breaks the terms of your processor agreement. Test systems also log requests, so a live number can sit in plain text on a server or in a shared document. Keep real card data in production, where tokenization handles it.

How to Run a Test Transaction

  1. Switch your API keys to sandbox or test mode.
  2. Copy a test card number from your processor docs.
  3. Send the charge with a future expiry and a 3-digit CVV.
  4. Check the response code and the dashboard entry for that charge.
  5. Repeat with a decline card and confirm your error message is correct.
  6. Test refunds, partial captures, and webhooks with the same numbers.
  7. Move to a 3D Secure test card and walk through the challenge flow.
  8. Clear sandbox data before launch.

Test Cards, Test Tokens, and Mock Data: Which Do You Need?

Each option covers a different layer of your stack, and most teams need more than one.

  • Test cards: best for checkout forms, payment APIs, and gateway response handling.
  • Test tokens: a saved card reference you can reuse for subscriptions and repeat charges.
  • Mock data: fake objects generated inside your own code for unit tests that never touch the network.

How to Build a Test Card Set for Your Suite

A single approval number is not enough. Pick a small set that covers the paths your customers hit.

  1. One approval card per brand you accept (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover).
  2. One decline card for a failed payment message.
  3. One card for insufficient funds or expired card, if your gateway offers it.
  4. One 3D Secure card for the authentication step.
  5. One card for refund and void testing.

Store these numbers in a config file or environment variable, not in your source code. That way a gateway change is a one-line fix.

Do Test Cards Cover Recurring Billing?

Yes, in most sandboxes. You can create a subscription with a test card, advance the simulated clock in some gateways, and watch renewals run. Charges still do not move money, and failed renewal emails go to the address in your test account.

Common Mistakes With Test Cards

  • Leaving production keys active while testing
  • Assuming one gateway's test card works on another
  • Hardcoding card numbers in source instead of a config file
  • Testing approvals only, while skipping declines and timeouts
  • Forgetting that refunds, voids, and webhooks need their own tests

FAQ

Are test transaction cards legal to use?

Yes. A test card carries no account and no funds. Processors publish them so developers can build and check payment flows.

Can a test card be charged for real money?

No. In test mode the charge never reaches a bank, so no account is debited.

Do test cards work in live mode?

No. Live mode rejects test numbers or treats them as invalid cards.

What is the difference between a test card and a virtual card?

A virtual card is a real credential tied to a real account and a real balance. A test card is a placeholder that exists inside a sandbox.

Does a test card need a real CVV?

No. The CVV field has to be present and the right length, but the value is not checked against an issuer.

Quick Recap

  • Test cards come from payment processors, not card networks.
  • They match live card format and return scripted results.
  • Use a future expiry and any CVV of the correct length.
  • Never put real card data in a test environment.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
