Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Payment Card: What It Is and How to Use One

What a test payment card is

A test payment card is a card number that a payment processor publishes for sandbox use. The number passes the Luhn checksum like a real card, but it is not tied to an issuing bank, a cardholder, or a balance. A charge against it returns whatever response the test environment is set to return: approval, decline, or error. No money moves and no live account is touched.

Where the numbers come from

Processors publish test cards in their developer documentation, and each processor controls its own list. A number from one gateway does not work in another gateway's sandbox, even when the two lists look similar.

  • Stripe documents fixed numbers for approvals, declines, and authentication flows, including 4242 4242 4242 4242 as its standard success card.
  • Adyen, Braintree, and Authorize.net each maintain separate lists tied to their own sandboxes.
  • Card networks define the test BIN ranges that processors draw from.

Use a test card in a sandbox

  1. Confirm the environment. Check that your API keys are test keys and that requests go to the test host, not the live one.
  2. Pick the scenario first. Decide whether you need an approval, a decline, or an authentication challenge before you type a number.
  3. Copy the number from the processor docs. Use the documented number for that scenario instead of inventing one.
  4. Fill the remaining fields. Use any future expiry date, any three-digit security code, and any postal code the sandbox accepts.
  5. Run the charge and read the response code. Match the returned code to the scenario you intended.
  6. Log the result. Record the response code in your test notes and clear the sandbox customer before the next case.

Test the failure paths

Approvals are the easy half of checkout work. Run the declines on purpose so your error handling gets exercised.

  1. Trigger a generic decline with the processor's decline test card and confirm your message is readable.
  2. Trigger an insufficient funds response and confirm the customer sees a distinct message.
  3. Trigger an expired card response and confirm the form flags the expiry field.
  4. Trigger an authentication challenge with a 3D Secure test card and walk through the redirect.
  5. Submit a wrong security code and confirm your form rejects it before the network call.

Rules that keep testing clean

  • Never enter a real card number into a sandbox. PCI DSS scope follows live cardholder data wherever it lands, including a test system.
  • Keep test keys out of production builds and rotate any key that leaks.
  • Do not read a test approval as proof that a live charge will clear. Live approvals depend on the issuer and the cardholder's balance.
  • Recheck the docs after a processor updates its test list, since retired numbers stop returning the expected code.
