Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Payment Card: How to Test Payments in a Sandbox

What a test payment card is

A test payment card is a card number that a payment processor publishes for sandbox use. It passes the same checks a real card passes, including the Luhn checksum and expiry validation, but it is tied to no bank account and moves no money. When you submit it in test mode, the processor returns a scripted response, such as an approval or a specific decline code, so you can build and verify checkout logic without touching live funds.

Test cards work only in a merchant test or sandbox environment. Entering one into a live terminal or a production checkout fails. Never enter a real card number into a test environment, and never store test numbers as though they were production data.

Prerequisites

  • A sandbox or test account with a payment processor
  • API keys for that sandbox, not your live keys
  • Access to the processor test card documentation
  • A test mode view in the processor dashboard

How to run a payment test

  1. Create a sandbox account with the processor you plan to use in production.
  2. Copy your sandbox API key and load it into your development environment.
  3. Open the processor test card page and pick a card listed as a successful charge.
  4. Enter the card number in your checkout form.
  5. Set the expiry date to any month in the future.
  6. Enter any three or four digit CVC value.
  7. Fill the billing postal code with a value the processor accepts for the test region.
  8. Submit the charge and confirm the dashboard shows the payment in test mode.
  9. Repeat the flow with a card listed as a decline scenario, such as insufficient funds.
  10. Record the decline code your application receives and map it to a user-facing message.
  11. Run a card that triggers 3D Secure or another authentication step and confirm the challenge renders.
  12. Test refunds, partial captures, and voids against the same test charge.
  13. Clear all sandbox records and swap in live keys only after every scenario passes.

What to verify in each test

Check that your form accepts a number without a real issuer, that your validation messages match the code the gateway returns, and that your order records show the correct status after a refund or a void. Confirm that failed authorizations leave no inventory hold and that repeated submissions do not create duplicate orders.

Keep a short list of the decline codes you support and the message each one produces. A generic "payment failed" screen hides bugs, so map codes such as expired card, insufficient funds, and do not honor to separate responses.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing live keys with test cards, which causes hard failures and may flag the account
  • Hardcoding a test card number into production code
  • Skipping authentication and refund paths
  • Leaving test customers and test invoices in the live database after launch

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
