Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Payment Card: Sandbox Card Numbers Guide

What a test payment card is

A test payment card is a card number that a payment processor publishes for use only in a sandbox or test environment. The number follows the same format as a live card, including a valid prefix, length, and Luhn checksum. When you submit it through test mode, the processor routes the request to a simulator instead of a card network. The simulator returns an approval or a decline based on rules tied to that specific number. No money moves, no bank is contacted, and the card cannot be charged in live mode.

Every major gateway publishes its own set of numbers. Stripe, for example, documents 4242 4242 4242 4242 as a Visa card that always approves. Other numbers trigger declines, require 3D Secure, or simulate a specific error code. You use them to build checkout flows, write automated tests, and reproduce support tickets without touching real customer data.

Prerequisites

  • A sandbox or test account with your payment processor.
  • Test API keys, not live keys. Test keys usually start with a prefix such as sk_test_.
  • A staging environment or local server that can send requests to the gateway.
  • A list of the test numbers your processor supports for each card brand you accept.

Steps to run a test transaction

  1. Open your gateway dashboard and confirm you are in test mode. Most dashboards show a visible test banner or a toggle.
  2. Copy the test API keys from the developer section of the dashboard and load them into your staging environment.
  3. Pick a test card number for the brand you want to exercise. Use 4242 4242 4242 4242 for a plain Visa approval.
  4. Enter any future expiration date, such as 12/34, and any three-digit CVC, such as 123. The simulator accepts almost any value for these fields.
  5. Use a fake billing ZIP such as 10001 when the form requires an address check.
  6. Submit the payment and watch the response in your gateway dashboard and in your application logs.
  7. Repeat the same flow with a decline number, such as 4000 0000 0000 0002, to confirm your error handling path.
  8. Run the request through your automated test suite so the same scenario is covered on every deploy.

Numbers worth keeping in your test file

  • Visa approval: 4242 4242 4242 4242
  • Visa decline: 4000 0000 0000 0002
  • Mastercard approval: 5555 5555 5555 4444
  • American Express approval: 3782 822463 10005
  • Visa debit approval: 4000 0566 5566 5556

These numbers come from vendor documentation and change from time to time. Treat the processor docs as the source of truth rather than a blog post.

Why test transactions fail

A test card that should approve can still be rejected, and the reason is usually on your side. The most common causes are a live API key in a staging config, a test number sent to a live endpoint, a card brand that your account is not enabled to accept, or a required field such as postal code left blank. Some gateways also block test numbers on live accounts as a fraud control. Check the raw error code and message before you assume the simulator is broken.

Rules for handling test card data

  • Never store test card numbers in the same database table as live card tokens.
  • Keep test keys out of production config files and out of public repositories.
  • Do not put test numbers in a real checkout page on a live domain. A visitor could mistake it for a working card.
  • Label your staging environment so support staff and testers know the data is not real.

Test payment cards exist so you can prove your checkout works before a real customer sees it. Build one approval path, one decline path, and one authentication path, then wire all three into your test suite. That covers the failures that actually reach your support queue.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide
