Test CVV UI: Sandbox Values and Validation Rules

What a CVV test checks

A CVV test sends a card verification value through a payment form and checks the result. Sandbox tools from Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree let a developer submit a CVV and read a pass or fail response without moving money. The test covers four things: the input accepts the right number of digits, the value passes client validation, the value reaches the payment API, and the form handles the response.

Field rules by card network

  • Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and UnionPay use 3 digits.
  • American Express uses 4 digits.
  • The field sits on the back for most cards, on the front for Amex.
  • The value is numeric only. Spaces, letters, and dashes fail validation.

Set maxlength="4" and inputmode="numeric" on the input. Use autocomplete="cc-csc" so browsers and password managers fill the field. Mask the digits on screen.

Sandbox test values

Each processor publishes its own test CVV set. Stripe test cards accept any 3-digit CVC for a success result and use printed test values to force a failure. Adyen and Braintree do the same with their own card lists. A test CVV that works on one processor does not carry to another. Pull the current list from the processor docs, because providers rotate cards and drop old ones.

Error codes to simulate

CVV mismatch returns a distinct code, not a generic decline. Stripe returns incorrect_cvc. ISO 8583 networks report CVC failure under response code 82. Build separate UI states for a mismatch, a blank field, and a network timeout. A mismatch message should point at the CVV field, not the whole form.

PCI limits on CVV handling

PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 forbids storing the CVV after authorization. A test flow should never write the value to logs, analytics events, or a database column. Send it to the processor and drop it from memory.

What a sandbox cannot test

A sandbox cannot reproduce live issuer behavior. Real banks apply their own risk rules, and 3-D Secure step-up happens outside the CVV field. Issuer-level CVV policy varies by region and card product. Treat sandbox results as a check of your code, not of cardholder behavior.
