Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide
I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
A test CVV number only works inside a payment gateway sandbox. There is no legitimate method for checking whether the CVV on a real card is correct, and running those checks across live card numbers is card testing fraud. Developers who need to simulate a CVV check use the test card numbers and test CVC values their gateway publishes in its own documentation.
The CVV is the 3-digit code printed on the back of most cards, or the 4-digit code on the front of American Express cards. It exists to prove that whoever is entering the card number physically holds the card. The merchant passes the code with the authorization request, the issuer compares it against its records, and the response comes back as match, no match, or not processed. PCI rules forbid merchants from storing the code after authorization completes.
This loop validates your form, your tokenization step, and your failure messaging without touching a live account.
Sending authorization requests against real card numbers to see which ones work is called card testing. The requests hit accounts the tester does not own, and the pattern shows up as bursts of small charges or zero-dollar authorizations from one IP range. Issuers flag it, processors shut down the merchant account that generated it, and federal prosecutors treat it as access device fraud and identity theft. A high decline rate is not a signal of a bad card. It is a signal of a criminal probe.
For development, use test mode. For production validation of a real customer's card, use your gateway's built-in AVS and CVV checks plus 3-D Secure, which push verification to the issuer and keep you out of the fraud path. If you need to test a specific decline code, most gateways expose it through a reserved test card number rather than a live one.

There is no legitimate place to sell CVV data. Trafficking in card verification values is card fraud under U.S. law; use lawful payment and fraud-reporting channels instead.
