Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Test Cases for CVV Field: QA Guide for Payment Forms

The short answer: a complete set of test cases for a CVV field covers format (3 digits for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, 4 for American Express), character set (digits only), length boundaries from empty to over-length, leading-zero handling, brand mismatch behavior, and server-side re-validation of a value that is never stored. The criteria used to rank the cases below are defect detection value, PCI DSS exposure, and the cost of automating each case. The positive path matrix takes the top spot because it is the smallest suite that catches the largest share of production failures, including the classic broken leading zero.

The rules your test oracle should encode

The card security code is printed on the card, not embossed, and it is classified as sensitive authentication data. A payment form collects it, sends it to the processor as part of an authorization request, and then discards it. That lifecycle defines what the field must accept and what the system must never do with the value afterward. Before writing cases, settle these questions with the product owner: does the form auto-detect the card brand from the primary account number, or does the user pick a brand? Is a 4-digit entry on a 3-digit brand rejected, truncated, or passed through to the processor? Does the field accept leading zeros without integer conversion stripping them?

Positive path matrix: the top pick for coverage

  • Pros: High defect yield per case, fast to automate, stable across releases, and each case maps to a real card brand rule.
  • Cons: Needs test card data that never touches real accounts, and brand rules change, so the matrix needs an owner who reviews it.
  1. Visa with a valid 3-digit code submits and receives an authorization response.
  2. Mastercard with a valid 3-digit CVC2 submits.
  3. Discover with a valid 3-digit code submits.
  4. American Express with a valid 4-digit card identification number submits.
  5. Leading zeros, such as 001 and 0001, are preserved end to end, including in logs of the last four characters if your policy allows partial logging at all.
  6. The code typed in a 3-D Secure challenge step matches the code submitted with the initial authorization request.

Negative and boundary cases

  • Pros: Exposes weak client-side validation, trimming bugs, and error-message leaks before they reach production.
  • Cons: Many variants, so the suite grows fast and can become slow if every case runs through a full checkout.

Run at least these: empty field; one digit; two digits on a 3-digit brand; five digits on a 3-digit brand; four digits on a 3-digit brand; letters only, such as abc; mixed alphanumeric, such as 12a; symbols, such as 12#; spaces inside the value, such as 1 2 3; a leading or trailing space that should be trimmed; a negative sign; a paste containing a trailing newline; a 1,000-character string; non-Latin digits such as full-width 123; an emoji; an injected script or SQL fragment. For each, confirm the submit button state, the inline error copy, and that the invalid value never reaches an authorization call.

Brand detection coupling

  • Pros: A single CVV field with brand auto-detection reduces user error and keeps the layout simple on mobile.
  • Cons: It creates coupling between the card number parser and the CVV validator, so a wrong brand guess produces a confusing error on a valid card.

Test the mismatch directly. Enter an American Express number with a 3-digit code, and a Visa number with a 4-digit code. Decide whether the field blocks input, shows a hint, or defers to the processor, then assert that behavior. Also test brand changes mid-entry, where the user edits the card number after typing the code.

Security and compliance cases

  • Pros: These cases protect the merchant from the most expensive category of audit finding.
  • Cons: Hard to verify from the UI alone, and they require access to logs, database schema, and tracing tools.

Confirm the field masks input, that the browser does not cache or autofill the value across sessions, and that no part of the code is written to application logs, error reports, analytics events, or database tables after authorization. Confirm validation also runs on the server, since a client-only check can be bypassed. Confirm the failure response is generic and that retry attempts are rate limited.

Manual versus automated execution

  • Pros of automation: Format, boundary, and masking cases are deterministic and cheap to run on every build.
  • Cons of automation: Brand detection quirks, mobile keyboards, autofill behavior, and paste handling still need a human on real devices.

Use-case recommendation

If you maintain a checkout form, automate the positive matrix and the format boundary set in your API or component test layer, then keep a short manual pass for keyboards, autofill, and brand switching on iOS and Android. If you are testing a hosted payment page, keep the CVV cases in the end-to-end suite against the sandbox and pair them with a log inspection case. Never use live card data for any of these cases.
