No Legit Market for CVV Data: Why Selling CVVs Is Illegal
There is no legitimate place to sell CVV data. Trafficking in card verification values is card fraud under U.S. law; use lawful payment and fraud-reporting channels instead.
A test card is a card number that a payment processor publishes for use in its sandbox. It passes the same format checks as a real card, returns the response the processor scripted for it, and declines in live mode. Developers use it to run checkout, subscription, refund, and error-handling flows without touching a real account.
A test card is not a stolen card, a prepaid card, or a card with a balance. It carries no money and no cardholder. Its only job is to trigger a specific result in a test environment.
Processors publish them in their developer documentation. Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, Braintree, and most gateway providers each maintain a table of numbers mapped to outcomes. Every table lists the card brand, the number, the expiration to use, and the response it produces. Pull the number from the docs of the processor you integrated, because a number that works in one sandbox typically fails in another.
Most tables group numbers by outcome: approved, generic decline, insufficient funds, lost card, stolen card, expired card, incorrect CVC, and processing error. Authentication flows get their own set, because the test needs a card that forces a challenge. If your product sells subscriptions, also run the number that returns a soft decline so you can watch the retry logic behave.
Stripe's most quoted example is 4242 4242 4242 4242, a Visa number that approves in test mode. It is the fastest way to confirm the pipe is connected. It is not a substitute for testing failures.
Test cards do not validate your risk rules, your fraud scoring, or your settlement reporting. They do not prove a real issuer will approve a charge. They also never leave the sandbox: entering a test number in a live checkout returns a decline and can trip the processor's own monitoring. Use them against test keys only.
Store test numbers in fixtures or seed scripts, not in production configuration. Keep sandbox and live keys in separate environment variables and check the active mode before every deploy. If your test suite writes card data to a database, use a synthetic number and keep that column out of backups so the test environment stays outside the scope of your card data audit.
