Do Stripe test cards need a real CVV code?

If you send 3 digits for an Amex card, Stripe may return a validation error before the charge is attempted. Match the field length to the brand on the client side.

Does Stripe check CVC format in test mode?

Yes. Format validation still runs. The API rejects a CVC field that contains letters, that has a length which does not match the brand, or that sits on a card number failing the Luhn check.

A mistyped test card number fails before any CVC logic runs. That error can look like a CVC problem when the real issue is the number itself.

Common mistakes when testing CVV codes

Can you use a real card number in test mode?

No. Stripe blocks live card numbers when your keys start with pk_test_ or sk_test_. Send a real number and the request fails.

Never paste live card data into a test environment either. PCI rules limit who can store card verification values at all.

Why is my test CVC rejected?

• The brand is Amex and you sent 3 digits instead of 4.
• You used a decline-test card, such as 4000 0000 0000 0127, and expected success.
• You are hitting live mode keys by mistake.
• Your form strips leading zeros from the CVC field.

What happens to the CVV after a test charge?

Nothing is stored. Stripe does not retain the CVC value after the authorization step, in test or live mode, which follows PCI DSS rules on sensitive authentication data.

Because of that, a repeated CVC check on the same card needs a new request. You cannot look up a stored CVV later.
