Stripe Test CVV Code: Any 3 Digits in Test Mode

Quick answer

Stripe test mode accepts any 3-digit CVV on its standard test cards. The value 123 works. So do 000 and 999. Stripe does not check the CVV on the standard card 4242 4242 4242 4242 unless the card is built to fail a specific check. The American Express test card 3782 822463 10005 uses a 4-digit code, such as 1234.

Cards that test CVC behavior

Stripe publishes cards that return a set result. These let you test your error handling.

  • 4000 0000 0000 0002: card declined, generic decline.

  • 4000 0025 0000 3155: requires 3D Secure authentication.

Amex and 4-digit codes

American Express cards carry a 4-digit code. Stripe follows that format in test mode. Test Amex number 3782 822463 10005 accepts 1234. Entering 3 digits on an Amex card returns a validation error in the payment form.

What a test CVV cannot do

A test CVV works only in Stripe test mode with a test API key. It has no value in live mode, on other processors, or on a real card. CVV values are not generated from the card number, so no formula or tool produces a valid CVV for a live account. Real CVV data comes from the issuing bank and is printed on the card.

The PCI Security Standards Council forbids storing the CVV after a transaction is authorized. Stripe does not retain it. A seller who offers CVV numbers for live cards is offering payment card data taken from accounts. In the US, trafficking in that data falls under 18 U.S.C. 1029. Buyers face the same charge.

Stripe lists its test cards in the public API docs, under testing. The list changes. Check it before you build a test suite. Stripe also shows test card details inside the Dashboard when test mode is on.
