Stripe Test Card Numbers: 4242 and Decline Cards

Stripe test card numbers work in test mode only. The default Visa number is 4242 4242 4242 4242. Enter any three digit CVC, any future expiry date, and any postal code. Stripe does not route test mode charges to card networks, so no money moves and no real account is charged.

How to use a test card

Switch the dashboard to test mode, or use an API key that starts with sk_test_ or pk_test_. Live keys reject test numbers. The checkout form validates the number with the Luhn checksum, so a mistyped digit returns a validation error before the request reaches the API. Expiry must be in the future. CVC length must match the brand, three digits for Visa and Mastercard, four for American Express.

Cards that trigger a decline

Stripe keeps a set of numbers that fail on purpose, so you can test error handling.

  • 4000 0000 0000 0002, generic decline
  • 4000 0000 0000 9995, insufficient funds
  • 4000 0000 0000 0069, expired card
  • 4000 0000 0000 0127, incorrect CVC
  • 4000 0000 0000 0119, processing error
  • 4000 0000 0000 0341, card attaches to a customer, then fails on charge

3D Secure test cards

EMV 3-D Secure adds an authentication step. These numbers open a test authentication page.

  • 4000 0025 0000 3155, authentication required
  • 4000 0000 0000 3220, 3DS2 required
  • 4000 0000 0000 3063, 3DS challenge flow
  • 4000 0000 0000 3055, 3DS supported, not enrolled

On the test page, choose the complete or fail option. The result sets the charge status and the three_d_secure field in the response.

Tokens and other methods

Stripe also ships single use tokens such as tok_visa and tok_mastercard. They skip raw card entry. For ACH Direct Debit tests, use routing number 110000000 with account number 000123456789. Test bank accounts settle only in test mode.

Limits

Test numbers pass the Luhn check, so they look valid to a client side validator. They cannot be charged in live mode. Stripe documents the full list in its testing reference, and the set changes when Stripe adds new brands or authentication paths. Numbers not listed here are unconfirmed.
