Stripe test cards are the fake card numbers developers use to simulate payments inside a sandbox account, and the most familiar one is 4242 4242 4242 4242. They exist so you can build, demo, and debug a checkout flow without touching a real card or moving real money. This guide covers what the numbers do, where the values come from, and how to read the results they produce.

The numbers are synthetic: sixteen-digit strings that pass a checksum but are attached to no account, issuer, or cardholder. Do Stripe test cards cost anything?

No. They are public sandbox values published openly in Stripe's documentation, so there is nothing to buy and no license involved.

Can a test card be used for a real purchase?

No. These numbers are rejected outside test mode and are not linked to any real account or balance. Any offer to sell working card numbers is fraud, and the values discussed here are never a substitute for one.

Why does the same number give different results?

Outcome depends on the specific value chosen and on your account mode. Some numbers are built to fail at authorization, others at capture, so match the number to the stage you are testing.
