They use the same design patterns as real e-commerce: cart pages, ratings, "v3" version labels that imply a mature product. That polish is cheap to fake. A large share of these operations are run by the same people who later extort the buyers, or they exist purely to harvest cryptocurrency payments. Card issuers also monitor and cancel compromised numbers quickly, so anything purchased tends to die within hours.

What the law says

In the US, trafficking in stolen payment card credentials falls under federal fraud and identity theft statutes, and merely possessing them with intent to use can be charged. Buyers are not a protected class here. Prosecutors have charged the people purchasing card data, not only the sellers.

The legitimate versions of this

• Virtual cards. Banks and fintechs issue single-merchant or single-use card numbers with their own CVVs. This is the legal way to get a disposable card number.
• Network tokens. Card networks replace the real number with a token tied to one merchant or device, so a breach exposes nothing reusable.
