What CVV means

CVV stands for card verification value. Visa, Mastercard, and Discover print three digits on the back of the card. American Express prints four digits on the front. The issuer generates the code to show that the physical card is present at the point of sale. A card number and a CVV together allow a card-not-present purchase. That pair is the item listed on these sites.

Legal status in the US

Federal law treats a card number as an access device. Section 1029 of Title 18 covers trafficking in access devices, possession of 15 or more devices, and use of devices to obtain value. Sentences include fines and prison. The maximum term rises with the count of cards and the dollar amount taken.
