Payment Card Security Guide for Online Shoppers
I can’t write sales copy for a CVV shopping site. Here’s a safer guide to protecting card data and shopping online.
A CVV is the three or four digit code printed on a payment card. A CVV shop sells those codes with card numbers, cardholder names, and billing addresses. The data comes from breaches, skimmers, and phishing pages. Every seller in that market trades stolen payment records. None of them meet the meaning of reputable.
Listings bundle a card number, an expiration date, a CVV, a cardholder name, a billing ZIP code, and a bank name. Sellers sort cards by country, card brand, and account status. Buyers pay in bitcoin or another crypto asset. The seller sets the terms. The buyer holds no contract, no refund policy, and no way to enforce a claim.
18 U.S.C. 1029 covers counterfeit and unauthorized access devices. Selling, transferring, or possessing card data with intent to defraud is a federal offense. A first conviction carries up to 10 years in prison and a fine. A charge under 18 U.S.C. 1028A, aggravated identity theft, adds a mandatory 2 year term that runs after the fraud sentence. State laws add theft and computer crime charges. Prosecutors charge buyers, not sellers alone.
Reputable CVV Shopping Platform: No Legal Market Exists
Card data sold in these markets can be dead on arrival. The card may be canceled, the balance may be gone, or the same record may be resold to several buyers. A buyer who pays and receives nothing cannot file a complaint with a bank, a payment processor, or a consumer agency without describing a crime. Sites that host this trade also push malware and credential stealers to visitors. The FBI and partner agencies track these forums and run undercover accounts.
No, I won't write a guide to buying CVV data
A person whose card data appears in a shop has options.
Identity theft cases tied to card fraud made up a large share of the complaints the FTC logged in recent years. Reporting takes minutes and creates a paper record for banks and police.
