Razorpay CVV Test Tool: Test Mode Cards Explained

Short answer

Razorpay does not publish a CVV generator. Test mode uses fixed card numbers and fixed CVV values that Razorpay lists in its own developer documentation. Those values work against the Razorpay sandbox. They fail on live payment endpoints, and they are not tied to a bank account.

How Razorpay test mode works

Razorpay splits its API into two environments. Live mode moves real money. Test mode returns simulated responses. Test keys start with rzp_test_. A test card number from the docs passes the Luhn checksum and returns a success, a failure, or a specific error code, based on the scenario you select.

What the CVV field does in test mode

  • Test mode runs a format check on the CVV. Three digits for most cards, four for a few card types.
  • The sandbox compares the value against the number listed for that test card.
  • No issuer, acquirer, or card network receives the data.
  • A wrong CVV can return a simulated CVV mismatch error, which is a useful test case.

There is no live CVV tool

A CVV is a three or four digit code printed on a card. It is not derivable from the card number, the expiry date, or the cardholder name. Payment networks do not expose a lookup endpoint. Any site that sells CVV values for live cards is selling stolen card data. That is a federal crime in the US under 18 U.S.C. 1029. The values are short-lived. A cardholder or issuer can cancel a card as soon as a charge is disputed.

Safe testing steps

  1. Create a Razorpay account and switch the dashboard to test mode.
  2. Generate a test key pair.
  3. Copy a test card number, expiry, and CVV from the current Razorpay docs page.
  4. Run the charge against the sandbox endpoint.
  5. Check the response code and the webhook payload.

Compliance notes

PCI DSS requirement 3.2 forbids storage of the CVV after authorization, in any form. Sandbox data sits outside that rule, but logging CVV values is still a bad habit. Razorpay rotates its test card list from time to time. If a test card fails, check the docs before you file a support ticket.
