Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Payment Card Test: Sandbox Testing and Fraud Prevention Guide

What Is a Payment Card Test?

A payment card test is a transaction used to check whether a card number, expiration date, and security code are valid and accepted by a payment system. Developers run these tests in a sandbox to confirm a checkout works before launch. Criminals run them against live checkout pages to sort stolen card data into working and dead numbers.

The same phrase covers two very different activities. The difference matters for merchants, developers, and anyone who handles card data.

How Developers Test Payment Cards

Every major processor ships a sandbox with published test card numbers. A test number passes format checks and routing logic but links to no real account, so no money moves.

  • One number returns an approval.
  • Another returns a generic decline.
  • A third triggers a 3D Secure challenge.
  • A fourth returns an insufficient funds error.

A full payment card test confirms more than the card itself. You also verify that your form catches bad input, that AVS and CVV responses map to the right messages, and that your system logs each result.

What a Good Sandbox Test Covers

  • Luhn check for the number format.
  • Expired date handling.
  • CVV length rules for each card brand.
  • AVS mismatch handling for street and ZIP.
  • Decline codes and retry logic.
  • Webhooks, refunds, and voided authorizations.

Keep live keys out of staging environments. A misconfigured test that hits the live endpoint creates real authorizations and real fees.

What Is a Card Testing Attack?

A card testing attack is a burst of small transactions aimed at a live payment page to find valid cards. The attacker feeds a list of card details into the form and watches the responses. Approvals mark cards worth reselling or using for larger purchases.

Attackers favor low dollar amounts because many gateways apply fewer checks to tiny charges. A fifty cent charge is cheap to risk and still returns a clear yes or no.

Where Card Data Comes From

Card numbers traded in criminal markets come from data breaches, skimmers on gas pumps and ATMs, and phishing pages. Buying, selling, or using that data is a crime in the US and most other countries. Enforcement agencies and card networks treat it as fraud, with penalties that include prison time and restitution.

Warning Signs on Your Gateway

  • Decline rates jump inside a short window.
  • Many cards arrive from a single IP address or device.
  • Repeated failed CVV checks across different card numbers.
  • Orders with mismatched billing and shipping data.
  • Traffic spikes outside your normal selling hours.
  • Several cards share one BIN range.

Why Card Testing Costs Merchants Money

Each attempt carries an authorization fee, and a failed attempt still costs you. High decline rates can push your account into a monitoring program or raise your processing rate.

The bigger loss comes later. Cards that pass a test get used for real purchases, and those purchases turn into chargebacks when the cardholder notices the charge. Enough chargebacks and the processor closes the account.

How to Stop Card Testing

Layer your defenses so one weak control does not expose the whole checkout. Start with the cheapest rules and add friction as volume rises.

  1. Require the CVV on every transaction. Many testers work from lists that carry a card number and expiry but no security code.
  2. Set velocity limits per IP, per card, and per device over rolling windows.
  3. Add a CAPTCHA or bot check on the payment step.
  4. Turn on 3D Secure. The extra authentication step stops most automated attempts.
  5. Set a minimum order amount, or flag small orders for manual review.
  6. Use gateway fraud tools and BIN blocklists for problem ranges.
  7. Alert on decline spikes so you react in minutes rather than days.

If an attack is underway, block the offending IPs and ASNs, tighten velocity rules, and contact your processor. Document what happened for your records.

Payment Card Test vs Live Transaction

  • Test: sandbox keys, published test numbers, no funds move, no settlement.
  • Live: live keys, real cardholder data, funds authorize and settle, fees apply.
  • Test: safe for any developer to run.
  • Live: legal only when the cardholder has authorized the charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a test card number?

A test card number is a published number that follows the format rules of a card brand but has no linked account. Processors list them in developer docs so engineers build checkout flows without touching real data.

Does a payment card test cost money?

Sandbox tests are free. Live attempts can cost an authorization fee, and repeated failed attempts may lead to account review or higher rates.

Is card testing illegal?

Testing cards you do not own and have no permission to use is fraud. Running your own integration against sandbox test numbers is normal engineering work.

What is a BIN attack?

A BIN attack runs many generated numbers from one card brand prefix. The attacker hopes to hit live accounts inside a large number range.

How do I test my own payment page safely?

Use sandbox API keys, published test numbers, and test 3D Secure credentials. Check approvals, declines, webhooks, refunds, and error messages before you switch to live keys.

Key Terms

  • BIN: the first six or eight digits of a card, which identify the issuing bank.
  • AVS: address verification, a check of billing street and ZIP against issuer records.
  • CVV: the three or four digit security code printed on the card.
  • 3D Secure: an authentication step where the issuer challenges the cardholder.
  • Velocity check: a rule that counts attempts per card, IP, or device over time.
  • Chargeback: a cardholder dispute that reverses a settled payment.
