Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

How to Write CVV Test Cases for Payment Forms

To write CVV test cases, you define inputs for the card verification value field, the expected result for each input, and the data state you check afterward. A complete set covers valid 3-digit and 4-digit values, invalid lengths, non-numeric characters, empty submissions, and confirmation that the code is never stored or logged after authorization. Each case should state the card brand used, because that determines the expected length.

What a CVV test case should verify

A test case is more than a field check. It confirms that the payment form accepts what it should, rejects what it should, and handles both outcomes without leaking sensitive data. Write each case with four parts: precondition, input, action, and expected result.

related article

  • Precondition: test mode enabled, a processor-issued test card number loaded, and a known card brand.
  • Input: the exact CVV string, including whitespace or symbols where relevant.
  • Action: submit, blur the field, or trigger validation by keyboard.
  • Expected result: the message shown, the form state, and the network response code.

Format rules to cover

Card brands differ on the CVV length, and your test suite should reflect that instead of assuming three digits for everything.

cvv input validation test cases

  • Most brands use a 3-digit code printed on the back of the card.
  • Some brands use a 4-digit code printed on the front.
  • The field should accept digits only and ignore or reject letters, symbols, and spaces.
  • Leading zeros are valid digits and must not be stripped by the form or the API payload.

Positive test cases

  • A correctly formatted 3-digit code on a matching brand returns an approved test transaction.
  • A correctly formatted 4-digit code on a brand that requires it returns an approved test transaction.
  • A valid code combined with a processor test decline card returns the issuer decline message, not a field error.

Negative and boundary test cases

  • Empty field: blocks submission and shows a required message.
  • Two digits and five digits: rejected with a length message.
  • Letters, symbols, and mixed strings such as 12a: rejected.
  • Spaces, tabs, and pasted values with trailing newlines: trimmed or rejected consistently.
  • SQL-style and HTML-style payloads: rejected or escaped, never executed.
  • Maximum-length input: capped at the field limit without a crash.
  • Repeated rapid submissions: only one authorization request is created.

Security constraints to build into every case

Payment card data handling is regulated, so security assertions belong inside the test cases, not in a separate document. Add checks that the CVV value does not appear in application logs, browser storage, analytics events, or error traces. Confirm the value is cleared from memory and the form after submission, and that a failed transaction does not retain it for a retry without re-entry.

  • Verify the CVV is never written to a database column after authorization.
  • Verify masked display in any admin or support view.
  • Verify the field uses an appropriate input type and autocomplete attribute so the value is not cached.

Test data rules

Use only the test card numbers and test CVV values published by your payment processor for sandbox environments. Never use real cardholder data in a test suite, and never invent numbers that could belong to an issued card. Test data should be stable, documented, and reusable across environments so results stay comparable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Testing only the happy path and skipping length, charset, and boundary cases.
  • Hardcoding a 3-digit assumption for every brand.
  • Checking the UI message but not the API payload or the response code.
  • Leaving the value in logs, screenshots, or bug reports.
  • Reusing one case across brands without recording the expected length.

Keeping the suite maintainable

Group cases by category: format validation, business rules, security, and integration. Give each one an ID, a priority, and a clear pass or fail statement so results are readable without extra context. Review the suite when the processor changes validation rules or a new brand enters your supported list.
