Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Expiry Date Test Card Guide: Sandbox Card Numbers Explained

You do not buy an expiry date test card. Payment processors publish test card numbers together with matching expiry dates and security codes at no cost in their developer documentation, and that documentation is the only legitimate source. What you actually choose between is processors, because the value of a test set comes from how many real scenarios it can reproduce: approvals, declines, expired-card errors, insufficient funds, and 3D Secure challenges. Pick the processor whose test matrix covers the failure paths your checkout must handle, then copy the numbers into your sandbox configuration and verify each one against your own gateway before you write test cases around it.

Test Expiry Card: How to Check Card Expiration Dates in Checkout Code

What an expiry date test card really is

A test card is a card number that only works inside a processor's sandbox environment. The expiry date attached to it is a fake future date, usually one to five years ahead of publication, chosen so the card passes basic date validation and reaches the authorization logic you are trying to test. Nothing is charged, no issuer is contacted, and no account is touched. Some processors also publish expired-date variants so you can confirm your form rejects a card whose date has passed.

Card Expiry Validation Guide

What to look for when you choose a test card set

  • Coverage of decline codes, not just successful payments. A set that only approves tells you almost nothing.
  • Separate expired-date test values so you can verify client-side and server-side date validation independently.
  • Card brands that match your production mix, including debit and prepaid ranges if you accept them.
  • 3D Secure and authentication simulation, which is where most integrations break first.
  • Documentation that shows a last-updated date. Test numbers get retired when processors migrate platforms.
  • Currency and region variants if you settle in more than one market.

Parameter bands worth checking

  • Expiry year offset: published test cards generally sit one to five years in the future. Anything closer than a year risks expiring mid-project.
  • Expiry month: month values are rarely meaningful in sandbox, but confirm that your gateway accepts single-digit and double-digit entry formats.
  • Security code length: three digits for most brands, four for American Express style ranges.
  • Card number length: 16 digits is standard, 15 and 19 digit ranges exist and are worth one test case each.
  • Number of distinct scenarios: a useful set covers at least five to ten discrete outcomes.

Common pitfalls

  • Hardcoding a test expiry date into fixtures with no note about when it was published, then wondering why a test suite fails a year later.
  • Using a live card number, even your own, in a sandbox. That drags real cardholder data into a non-production environment and breaks PCI DSS scope rules.
  • Treating a sandbox approval as proof your production integration works. Sandbox behavior differs from live issuer responses.
  • Buying card data from third parties. Valid card numbers obtained that way are stolen payment credentials, and using them is a federal offense, not a testing shortcut.
  • Assuming a number is valid because it passes a Luhn check. Luhn validation proves nothing about authorization.
  • Sharing sandbox credentials in public repositories, which leaks your merchant configuration.

FAQ

Do test cards cost anything?

No. Processors give them away as part of sandbox access. Any site charging for an expiry date test card is either reselling free documentation or selling stolen card data.

Why did my test card stop working?

Either the published expiry date passed or the processor rotated its test numbers during a platform update. Check the documentation page date before you debug your code.

Can I use a real card in a sandbox?

Not safely. Real card numbers in test environments expand your compliance scope and can violate your merchant agreement. Use the published sandbox values instead.

How often should I review my test card set?

Quarterly is a reasonable cadence, plus any time you change gateways, add a card brand, or enable a new authentication flow.
