Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Dummy CVV vs Real CVV: Test Values vs Cardholder Codes

Sandbox test values published by your payment processor are the pick. Every major platform ships documentation that lists test card numbers with matching test CVVs, and those are the only CVVs anyone should be sourcing, comparing, or typing into a form. A real CVV is not a product you shop for. It is a three or four digit code tied to one physical card, and the only legitimate place it appears is on that card, entered by the cardholder at checkout. This comparison scores both against four criteria that decide the answer: legal status, what the code actually authenticates, how it must be handled after the sale, and what happens when the value is wrong.

How the comparison was built

Each option is judged on the same four points, in this order:

dummy cvv code example

  • Legality: can a merchant, developer, or shopper obtain and use it without breaking a law.
  • Function: what the gateway is actually verifying when the field is submitted.
  • Storage: whether the value may be retained after authorization.
  • Failure mode: what a decline looks like and who absorbs the cost.

Option 1: Dummy CVV (sandbox test code)

A dummy CVV is a fixed placeholder value that your processor documents alongside a test card number. It is designed to satisfy your own form validation and to trigger predictable responses from the gateway in test mode, such as an approval, a specific decline, or a step-up authentication challenge. It authenticates nothing about a human being because there is no account behind it. It exists so engineers can exercise the checkout path without touching live card data.

Buy Test Credit Card Dummy CVV: A Comprehensive Guide

Pros

  • Free and public. Processors publish test cards and test CVC values in their own developer docs.
  • Safe to commit to a repository, share in a ticket, or paste into a staging environment.
  • No legal exposure, no cardholder data, no PCI scope in your development pipeline.
  • Lets you reproduce declines and 3D Secure flows on demand.

Cons

  • Works only against test keys and test mode. It will fail instantly on a live charge.
  • Varies by processor, so values are not portable between providers.
  • Proves nothing about fraud controls, since no issuer is involved.

Best for

Developers, QA testers, and anyone building or auditing a payment integration. This is the recommended option for every case where you are not the cardholder making a real purchase.

Option 2: Real CVV (the code on a live card)

A real CVV is generated with the card and printed on it, three digits on the back for most brands and four digits on the front for some. In a live transaction it is a weak proof that the person paying is holding the physical card, which is why it is one of the few fields an issuer checks in real time. It authenticates the card, not the buyer, and it is not a standalone security control.

Pros

  • It is the only value that will authorize a live charge.
  • Issuers decline a mismatch immediately, so it blocks a large share of copy and paste card numbers.
  • Requiring it is standard practice and expected by shoppers on legitimate checkouts.

Cons

  • You may not store it. PCI DSS forbids retaining sensitive authentication data after authorization, which means it cannot be vaulted, logged, or emailed.
  • Only the cardholder may enter it. Asking a customer to send it through chat, text, or a support ticket is a red flag and a compliance failure.
  • Using someone else's is a federal offense, not a gray area.

Best for

One situation only: the cardholder entering their own code on a checkout page they trust. There is no other legitimate use case.

The middle ground people are actually searching for

Searches that pair CVV with buying almost always point at the stolen card market. That market is two things, and neither is a shortcut. The first is outright fraud against the buyer: sellers who take payment and deliver invented numbers, already-dead numbers, or numbers recycled to multiple buyers. The second is federal card fraud and identity theft, punishable under US law, with the added problem that the technique does not scale. A mismatched CVV is declined at authorization, address verification flags the order, step-up authentication interrupts it, and velocity rules on the issuer side kill the pattern within a few attempts.

Recommendation

  1. Testing a payment flow? Use your processor's documented test card and test CVV, in test mode, with test keys. Cost: nothing.
  2. Building a checkout? Collect the CVV, pass it once, never store it, and let the gateway do the check.
  3. Shopping? Type the code on your own card and nothing else.
  4. Looking to buy a CVV from a stranger? The correct move is to close the tab. There is no version of that transaction where you end up with a working number and no legal risk.

Common questions

Can a dummy CVV pass a live checkout?

No. Test values are recognized as test values, and live keys will reject them or route them as invalid data.

Do test CVVs cost money?

No. They are published free in processor documentation and are meant to be copied.

Why was my test card declined?

Usually because live keys were used, the test value did not match the documented one, or the account is not in test mode.

Is buying a CVV ever legal?

Not when the card belongs to someone else. That is access device fraud and identity theft.
