Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV2 Explained: What the Code on Your Card Is For

What CVV2 Actually Is

CVV2 is the three-digit code printed on the back of most Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards, sitting in or near the signature panel. The name stands for Card Verification Value 2. American Express prints a four-digit version on the front of the card and calls it the Card Identification Number, or CID. Different label, same job: it shows that whoever is typing the account number has the physical card in hand.

The detail that makes it interesting is where it is not. The code is not encoded on the magnetic stripe, and it is not part of the chip data. It exists only as printed characters. That one design choice is the reason it carries so much weight.

Why a Merchant Asks for It

When you check out online, there is no card to swipe and no signature to compare. The merchant has a number, an expiration date, and a name, all of which can be typed by anyone who copied them down. So the checkout form asks for one more thing. If the code matches what the issuer has on file for that account, the transaction gets a small boost of confidence. It is not proof of identity, and it does not stop every bad charge, but it raises the cost of fraud.

What the Rules Say About Saving It

Under PCI DSS, the verification code counts as sensitive authentication data. A merchant may use it to authorize a purchase, but is not allowed to keep it once that authorization is done. If a store offers to save your card for faster checkout next time, the code should not be part of what gets stored. When you see a saved card on a site, the code is generally requested again for each new order, and that is the correct behavior.

Why You Should Never Read It Out Loud

No legitimate bank calls you and asks for the code on the back of your card. A real fraud department already sees the account. If someone on the phone, in a chat window, or in a text message asks for the account number, the expiration date, and the code together, they are asking for the whole card. That combination is what turns a string of digits into a working payment method.

The Bundle That Gets Passed Around

Card data traded in criminal channels typically travels as a set: account number, expiration date, cardholder name, billing address, and the verification code. The code is the piece that lets a stranger run an order through an online checkout. I would guard it harder than the account number itself, because the number without the code is far less useful to someone who does not have your card.

Habits That Keep the Code Yours

  • Never send card details by email, text, or direct message. None of those channels are built for secrets.
  • Type the code only on a checkout page you reached by entering the address yourself, not one you arrived at from a link in an email.
  • Use virtual card numbers when your issuer offers them. A merchant breach cannot expose a number that stopped existing after one purchase.
  • Turn on transaction alerts for every charge. The faster you see a charge you do not recognize, the faster the card gets shut off.
  • Skip browser autofill for the security code on any device you do not control.
  • If a hotel or rental agency needs a card on file, ask whether the account number alone will hold the reservation.

If the Code Leaks

Call the number on the back of your card and ask for a replacement. A leaked code plus a leaked account number means a new card, not monitoring. A new code on the same account number is not enough when both pieces are out. After that, check your statements for small test charges, since fraudsters often run a tiny purchase first to see whether the card still works.
