What Happens If You Use a CVV Website to Buy Bitcoin?

Buying CVV numbers from websites using bitcoin is a form of credit card fraud. CVVs are the three- or four-digit security codes on payment cards; they are not meant to be sold. Anyone who sells or buys them is participating in identity theft and unauthorized card use.

In practice, these CVV websites are rarely legitimate. Many are run by criminals who take your bitcoin and give you worthless or expired card data. Some even blackmail buyers by recording their IP address and demanding more money.

Legal Consequences Are Severe

In the United States, trafficking stolen card data violates federal laws including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the Identity Theft and Assumption Deterrence Act. If you are caught, you could face fines, imprisonment, and a permanent criminal record. Bitcoin transactions are not anonymous because every transaction is recorded on a public ledger, giving investigators a trail.

How to Recognize a CVV Scam Website

  • They advertise on dark web markets, Telegram, or illicit forums.
  • They demand payment only in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
  • They guarantee “fresh” or “valid” CVVs, which is a hallmark of fraud.
  • They lack identifiable business information or terms of service.

Safe Alternatives to Protect Your Finances

Instead of buying stolen card data, protect your own. Check your credit card statements regularly, set up transaction alerts, and use virtual card numbers when shopping online. If you see unauthorized charges, report them immediately to your bank or credit union.

If you need help with crypto, purchase bitcoin only from regulated exchanges and store it in a secure wallet. Never use bitcoin to buy data that could be stolen.

Report CVV Fraud

If you have encountered a CVV-selling website or been a victim of a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. Reporting helps law enforcement shut down these networks.
