Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV UI Testing: A Practical Guide for Checkout Forms

What CVV UI testing actually covers

CVV UI testing is the work of checking that the card verification value field on a payment form accepts, rejects, formats, and explains input the way it should. It is a front-end job, not a fraud job. You are testing the input box, its label, its mask, its error copy, and how it behaves on a phone keyboard. The network call that authorizes the card is a separate concern with its own test plan.

I treat the CVV field as three fields in one: a security control, a formatting control, and an accessibility surface. Each one fails in a different way, so each one needs its own cases. A form can pass every functional check and still lose customers who cannot type four digits on an iPhone.

Card brand rules that change the field

  • Visa, Mastercard, and Discover print a 3-digit code on the back of the card.
  • American Express prints a 4-digit code on the front, above the card number.
  • Some co-branded and regional cards vary, so a hard cap at 3 digits blocks real customers.

The field should accept 3 or 4 digits and validate against the detected brand instead of a fixed length. If your form reads the brand from the first digits of the card number, test the transition. Type a Visa prefix, enter 3 digits, then switch to an Amex prefix and confirm the field does not lock you out or clear what you typed.

Test cases I run on every checkout

  1. Empty submit: does the form name the field as required, or does it fail with a generic error?
  2. Letters and symbols: paste "abc" or "12-" and see whether the field strips them or accepts them.
  3. Leading zeros: 007 and 0123 should pass length checks and never be trimmed.
  4. Over-length input: a 5th digit should be refused or ignored, not pushed into the next field.
  5. Paste from a password manager: blocked paste is a conversion killer, so test it first.
  6. Browser autofill: saved cards rarely fill the CVV, and the form must not break when it does not.
  7. Whitespace: " 123 " should be trimmed without an error.
  8. Brand switch mid-entry, as described above.
  9. Non-Latin keyboards and IME input on Android.
  10. Zoom to 200 percent and confirm the field stays reachable.

Error states and copy

An error that says "invalid CVV" and nothing else tells the user nothing. Say what is wrong and where the code lives: "Enter the 3-digit code from the back of your card." Keep the message next to the field, keep the card number intact so nobody retypes 16 digits, and announce the message with an aria-live region so screen readers pick it up. Watch for errors that vanish on blur before the user can read them.

UI CVV Test: How to Test the Card Security Code Field

Accessibility and mobile input

Set type="text" with inputmode="numeric", not type="number". Number inputs add spinners, break leading zeros, and behave badly with locale settings. Use autocomplete="cc-csc" so browsers and password managers can do their part. Tie the label to the input with a for attribute, and link any hint text with aria-describedby. On a physical keyboard, tab order should move from card number to expiry to CVV without a detour.

Automation notes

In Playwright or Cypress, assert against the DOM rather than the payment network. Sandbox test cards give you predictable brand behavior without touching live keys. Fill the field with keyboard events, then repeat the same case with a paste event, because the two paths hit different handlers. Snapshot the error text, not just the error class.

Failures I see most

  • A hardcoded maxlength of 3 that rejects Amex.
  • type="number" eating leading zeros and showing spinners.
  • Paste blocked in the name of security.
  • No inputmode, so mobile users get a full QWERTY keyboard.
  • Error text that clears on blur.
  • A tooltip or toast that echoes the entered code back on screen.

None of these are hard to fix. They survive because nobody writes a test for the field after the first sprint, and the CVV box is the one field on the page that almost never gets a design review.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
