Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Tokenization Software: How It Works and What to Check

The short answer

CVV tokenization software replaces a card's security code with a surrogate value, so the real three or four digits are never stored, logged, or passed between systems in the clear. The software either swaps in a network token plus a single-use cryptogram, or it keeps a verification token that records that the code was checked without keeping the code itself. It exists because PCI DSS flatly forbids retaining the CVV after authorization.

Why the term covers three different things

Ask five vendors what CVV tokenization means and you will get three answers. All of them are legitimate, but they solve different problems.

  • Network tokenization. A card network issues a token that stands in for the 16-digit number, and each transaction carries a cryptogram instead of a static CVV. The merchant touches neither the PAN nor the code.
  • Vault-based tokenization. A payment processor stores the card in a PCI-compliant vault and hands your systems a reference ID. The CVV is used once during authorization and then discarded.
  • CVV verification tokens. The gateway returns a token that says the code matched without revealing it, which lets a subscription or stored-card flow prove verification happened without holding sensitive authentication data.

Only the first two scale across card networks. The third is a merchant-side shortcut and comes with more compliance homework.

How the transaction flow actually runs

  1. The customer types the card number, expiry, and code into hosted fields or an SDK, so the raw values never hit your server.
  2. The tokenization service sends those values straight to the processor or network over an encrypted channel.
  3. The issuer authorizes the charge and checks the CVV.
  4. The service returns a token and, on network token rails, a cryptogram tied to that merchant and that transaction.
  5. Your order system stores the token. Repeat charges use the token, and the cryptogram is regenerated each time.

If your architecture ever puts a raw CVV in a database column, a log file, or a support ticket, the tokenization layer is decorative. It has to sit in front of the storage, not beside it.

What to check before you buy

  • PCI DSS validation level. Ask for an Attestation of Compliance and confirm it covers tokenization, not just payment processing.
  • Token portability. Network tokens that survive a processor migration save you a painful re-vaulting project.
  • Cryptogram support. Static tokens without per-transaction cryptograms do less than the marketing suggests.
  • Scope reduction. A provider that keeps your environment out of PCI scope is worth more than one that just relocates the storage.
  • Logging controls. Field-level masking and automatic redaction, confirmed in writing.

The rule that trips people up

PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 prohibits storing sensitive authentication data after authorization. That includes full track data, the CVV2, and the PIN block. There is no retention exception for "we only keep it for chargebacks" and no exception for "it is encrypted." Tokenization is the standard way to satisfy the rule while still supporting refunds, subscriptions, and card-on-file billing.

It also means a vendor selling something described as a CVV database or a CVV store is describing a violation, not a feature. Real tokenization software never gives the number back. That is the whole point.

Where it stops helping

Tokenization protects stored and in-flight card data. It does nothing about a compromised checkout page, a skimmer script, or a social engineering call to your support desk. Pair it with a hosted payment page, script monitoring, and tight access controls, or you have secured the vault while leaving the front door open.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
