Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Validation Message v2: Codes and What They Mean

A CVV test validation message v2 is the response a payment gateway sends when a sandbox transaction runs a card verification value check. It reports an outcome such as a pass, a mismatch, or a not-processed state, so you can verify your checkout form, tokenization flow, and error display before you accept live cards. These messages apply to gateway-issued test card numbers, never to real card data.

What does a CVV test validation message v2 tell you?

The message covers one narrow event: the result of comparing the submitted CVV against the value the issuer holds for that card. It does not confirm the card is open, funded, or safe to charge. A pass means the three or four digit code matched.

  • Match (M): the code matched. The gateway lets the authorization continue to other checks.
  • No match (N): the code was wrong. In a sandbox this comes from test cards built to force the response.
  • Not processed (P): the issuer or processor skipped the check. This shows up on some card types and regions.
  • Not supported (U): the card brand or issuer does not take part in CVV verification.
  • Unavailable: the gateway could not reach the verification service.

Version 2 message sets add fields that older responses lacked, such as a reason code, the check outcome, and a request identifier. That extra data helps you log failures and route them to support.

How do you run a CVV test in a sandbox?

  1. Open a test account with your payment provider and switch the API keys to test mode.
  2. Use the provider's published test card numbers. Each number maps to a fixed CVV result.
  3. Submit a payment with the CVV field left blank, then wrong, then correct. Record each message.
  4. Confirm your checkout shows a plain error and keeps the customer on the form.
  5. Check that your logs store the message code but never the CVV digits.
  6. Repeat the run for every card brand you plan to accept.

Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree publish test numbers that trigger each CVV response. Stripe lists card numbers where any CVV passes, plus numbers that fail the check every time. Use those, since no live card belongs in a test environment.

How does CVV validation differ from AVS?

CVV checks the printed code on the card. Address verification, or AVS, compares the billing street number and ZIP code to what the issuer holds. Gateways report the two checks with separate codes, so a clean CVV result with a failed AVS still points to risk.

Card brands set the rules for both checks through their own specs. Visa calls the code on the back of the card CVV2, while Mastercard uses CVC2 and American Express uses CID. The response formats follow the ISO 8583 message standard that networks use to move authorization traffic.

Why does a live CVV check fail?

  • A typing error in the three digit code, or a customer reading the wrong side of the card.
  • American Express cards use a four digit code printed on the front, not the back.
  • A card that the customer has not activated yet sometimes returns a not-processed result.
  • Mismatched billing data can trip other checks and mask the CVV outcome in your logs.

What are the rules on handling CVV data?

PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data. Requirement 3.2 forbids storing it after authorization in any form, including hashed or encrypted. Merchants who keep CVV in a database fail their assessment and face fines from the acquiring bank.

Buying, selling, or trading card numbers and CVVs is a crime in the US and most other countries. The legal path is a merchant account or a payment provider that handles card data for you, which keeps the sensitive digits inside their certified systems.

FAQ

Why does my gateway return a v2 validation message instead of the old format?

Most processors moved to newer message sets to carry more detail per response. The v2 payload adds reason codes and identifiers, so you see why a check failed rather than a single generic decline. Older integrations still parse the first version, and providers keep both live during a migration window.

Does a CVV match mean the card is valid?

No. A match shows only that the code matched the issuer's record. The card can still be closed, over its limit, or flagged for fraud. Treat a CVV result as one signal in a wider risk decision.

Can I test CVV validation with a real card?

No. Test modes reject live numbers, and running real card data through a sandbox breaks your provider agreement and PCI rules. Use the published test cards and their fixed outcomes.

What should I log when a CVV check fails?

Log the message code, the timestamp, the request ID, and the last four digits if your provider returns a token. Never log the CVV itself. Keep the failure reason so support can explain the decline to a customer.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
