Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Validation Message v2: Codes and Meaning

A CVV test validation message v2 is the response a payment gateway returns when a sandbox card is submitted with a card verification value and the gateway is set to approve, decline, or flag that check. The message reports one result (match, no match, not processed, or unavailable) and carries a version tag, so v2 means the second revision of that message format. Testers read the string to confirm a checkout form shows the right copy for each outcome before live cards reach the site.

What does the v2 message contain?

Most processors return a small object rather than a single sentence. The fields below appear in nearly every sandbox response.

  • Result code: a one-letter value such as M, N, P, S, U, or X.
  • Message text: a readable line like "CVV match" or "CVV no match".
  • Version: the format revision, for example "v2".
  • Request ID: a unique string for support tickets and log search.
  • Card brand: Visa, Mastercard, and Amex report the same codes with different field names.

Field names change between gateways. The result code set stays close to the card network standard, which is why the letters below travel well across providers.

CVV validation test messages and their standard codes

Card networks publish a shared code set for CVV2 and CVC 2 checks. Sandboxes replay each code so you can build against all of them.

cvv test validation message v1

  • M (Match): the code sent matches what the issuer has on file.
  • N (No match): the code is wrong. The check failed.
  • P (Not processed): the check never ran. Common in sandboxes and in cross-border traffic.
  • S (Should have been present): the field was empty but the issuer expected a value.
  • U (Issuer unable): the issuer could not answer, often a timeout.
  • X (No response): no result came back from the network.

Treat P, U, and X as unknown, not as good. A checkout that lets an order through on P is a checkout that lets a stolen card through.

How do you run a CVV validation test?

  1. Switch to sandbox keys. Live keys route to real issuers and move real money.
  2. Pick a test card that maps to the result you want. Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree publish test numbers that force M, N, and P.
  3. Send the correct code length. Three digits for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Four for American Express.
  4. Log the full response object, not just the message string. You will need the code and version later.
  5. Repeat for each outcome and check the user copy on your payment page.
  6. Confirm your database never stores the code after authorization. PCI rules forbid it.

Why the v2 label matters

Payment APIs ship changes in versioned waves. When a gateway moves a message to v2, field names, nesting, and sometimes the text itself shift. Code that parses v1 by splitting a string breaks on v2.

Parse the result code, not the sentence. Message text serves logs and support agents, and providers rewrite it without notice. The one-letter code is the stable part.

If your logs show v2 responses arriving on a v1 endpoint, check your API version header. Gateways fall back to the account default when the header is missing.

What separates a good v2 message from a bad one?

  • A code you can branch on, with no string matching.
  • A version field, so parsers know what they got.
  • A request ID, so support can trace one transaction.
  • Clear separation between a failed check and a check that never ran.

A gateway that returns "invalid" for every problem forces you to guess. Ask for the full code set during integration and test against it.

Common mistakes in CVV testing

  • Testing only the success case. Most bugs live in the decline path.
  • Hardcoding message text in the UI. Translations and gateway updates break it.
  • Writing the CVV into a log file. That is a PCI violation with fines attached.
  • Mixing sandbox and live keys in one config file.
  • Skipping Amex, where the code is four digits and sits on the front of the card.

FAQ

Does a CVV match prove the card is valid?

No. A match means the three or four digits line up with issuer records. The card can still be expired, closed, or over its limit, and the authorization step decides that.

Why does my sandbox return "not processed" every time?

Some test accounts ship with the CVV check turned off, so every request lands on P. Enable the rule in your gateway dashboard or use a test card that forces a different result.

How many digits should I test?

Three for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. Four for American Express. Two for some Maestro cards, though those are rare in US checkout flows.

Is the v2 message the same at every gateway?

No. The codes follow card network standards, but field names, nesting, and HTTP status codes differ. Read the provider test documentation before you write a parser.

Can I test CVV validation without a real card?

Yes. Sandbox test numbers behave like live cards inside the test environment and never touch an issuer. That is the only safe way to test this path.

What to check before you ship

Run each code, M through X, through your checkout. Confirm the page blocks the order on N, S, and the unknown results, and that your logs capture the code and version. Then confirm the code never lands in your database.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
