Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test UX: Testing Checkout Security Code Fields

CVV test UX means checking how the card security code field behaves for real people, not just whether the server accepts a valid code. The criteria that decide pass or fail are field length accuracy across card brands, input mechanics on mobile and desktop, error recovery, accessibility for keyboard and screen reader users, and compliance with the rule that the code is never stored after authorization. A field that validates correctly but blocks American Express, kills paste, or clears the whole form on a typo is still a broken field.

cvv test interaction

What the CVV field actually has to do

The security code is three digits on most cards and four on American Express. It sits on the back of Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards and on the front of American Express cards. That single fact drives most of the test cases you need, because a field hardcoded to three digits fails a real share of your customers before they ever reach the pay button.

cvv test usability

Build a brand matrix and test against it

Work from the test cards your payment processor publishes, then push each brand through the field.

cvv test interaction

  • Three digit code, back of card: verify the field accepts exactly three and rejects a fourth keystroke or shows an inline error.
  • Four digit code, front of card: verify the field does not truncate input at three characters and that the helper text updates to match.
  • Codes that begin with zero: verify leading zeros survive submission and are not stripped by number formatting.
  • Unknown or undetectable brand: verify the field still accepts three or four digits and does not lock the user out.

If you detect the card brand from the card number, test the case where the user pastes a card number and the CVV helper text changes mid flow. A label that says "3 digits on the back" while the user holds an American Express card is a conversion problem, not a copy problem.

Understanding CVV Test Interactions: A Comprehensive Guide

Input mechanics worth testing

  • Mobile keypad: the field should open a numeric keypad, which is set with the inputmode attribute rather than the older number input type that adds spinners and stripping behavior.
  • Autofill: browsers and password managers recognize security code fields through the autocomplete token. Test that autofill fills the right field and does not paste the card number into the CVV box.
  • Paste: pasting a code should work. Blocking paste to "prevent errors" creates errors.
  • Length enforcement: prefer inline validation over silently swallowing keystrokes. Silent truncation makes users think their keyboard is broken.
  • Masking: masking the code as dots is defensible on shared screens, but test that the user can still confirm what they typed, usually through a short reveal control that does not persist the value.

Error states and recovery

Trigger every failure you can: empty field, two digits, letters, five digits, valid format but declined authorization. For each one, check three things. Does the message say what is wrong and where to find the code? Does the error appear next to the field rather than in a banner at the top? Does the rest of the form survive untouched? Clearing the card number because the CVV was short is one of the most common and most expensive checkout defects.

Test the decline path separately from the format path. A declined transaction is not a validation error, and copy that says "invalid CVV" after a decline sends users hunting for a problem that does not exist. Ask your processor to simulate decline responses so you can see the real message a customer would get.

Accessibility checks

  • The field has a label programmatically tied to the input, not placeholder text standing in for a label.
  • The hint that explains where to find the code is associated with the field so screen readers announce it.
  • Errors are announced when they appear, not only shown in red. Color alone fails users with low vision or color blindness.
  • The touch target meets common minimum sizing guidance, and the field is reachable and operable by keyboard alone.
  • Zoom to 200 percent and confirm the CVV field, its hint, and its error message all remain visible without horizontal scrolling.

The security rule that shapes the design

PCI DSS treats the security code as sensitive authentication data that must not be retained after authorization. In practice that means no storing it, no logging it, no echoing it back on a confirmation screen, and no pre-filling it on a return visit. That constraint is not negotiable for UX convenience, so the interface has to compensate with clear labeling, brand aware helper text, and a field users can complete correctly on the first try. Any test plan that proposes keeping the code to save the customer a step is testing the wrong thing.

Metrics that tell you whether it worked

  1. Completion rate for the payment step, segmented by card brand.
  2. Field level error rate for the CVV box compared with card number and expiry.
  3. Time spent on the CVV field, since long dwell times usually mean users are hunting for the code.
  4. Abandonment at the payment step, tracked before and after any field change.
  5. Support contacts mentioning the security code, which surface copy problems that analytics miss.

Failures that show up again and again

A fixed three digit limit that blocks American Express. No numeric keypad on mobile. A form reset on any single field error. A password style mask with no way to confirm the entry. Helper text that never changes even when the brand is known. Each one is cheap to fix and easy to miss, because the field passes a functional test with a single Visa test card. Test the matrix, test the error paths, test with a keyboard and a screen reader, and the CVV field stops being the quiet source of dropped checkouts.
