Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test UX Design: Build a Reliable Security Code Field

CVV test UX design is the practice of building, validating, and pressure-testing the card security code field with sandbox data before a payment form goes live. A correct implementation accepts three digits for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, four for American Express, and blocks malformed input before the request ever reaches the processor. The payoff is a checkout where real customers type once and succeed.

What counts as a CVV test in UX design?

A CVV test is any validation run using sandbox card data rather than a live card. It checks field geometry, input filtering, error messaging, and the handoff to your payment gateway. Test mode exists so you can break the form on purpose without touching a real account.

Which test values should you use in a sandbox?

Most payment providers publish their own test card numbers, and the CVC rule varies by provider. Some sandboxes accept any well-formed value, while others require one documented code to simulate a match. Never paste real card numbers into staging, logs, or screenshots.

Two rules keep the test environment clean. First, read your provider's test documentation instead of guessing a value. Second, treat every test CVC as public data that can never appear in production code paths.

How should the CVV field be designed?

Field sizing and brand detection

The input width should signal the expected length. A narrow three-character field reads as a short code; a wider field invites extra digits. When you detect the card brand, switch the maxlength from three to four and relabel the field for American Express.

Labels, tooltips, and helper text

Use one consistent label such as "Security code" rather than swapping between CVV, CVV2, CVC, and CID. Pair it with a small card graphic that highlights the code location on the back, or the front for American Express. A tooltip should confirm the code is not the card number.

How do you test CVV states before launch?

  1. Enter a valid test code and confirm the form submits with no client errors.
  2. Submit a two-digit code and verify the inline error appears on blur, not on every keystroke.
  3. Submit a five-digit code to confirm the length cap holds.
  4. Switch test brands and check that the field resizes and the label updates.
  5. Simulate a declined response and confirm the code field clears while the card number stays.
  6. Run the form with autofill and a screen reader to catch mismatched attributes.

What accessibility rules apply to CVV inputs?

  • Set inputmode to numeric so mobile users get a digit keypad.
  • Keep type as text so leading zeros survive.
  • Use the autocomplete token cc-csc for the security code field.
  • Bind error text to the input with aria-describedby.
  • Never rely on color alone to show a validation state.

What mistakes break CVV UX?

Masking the code by default adds friction with no security benefit, since the digits are short and never stored. Autotabbing to the next field before the fourth digit lands frustrates American Express users. Storing the code after authorization also violates card industry rules, so the field should be cleared from memory once the request completes.

Test the unhappy paths first. A CVV field that fails well is easier to trust than one that only works when everything goes right.
