Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Transaction for Developers: Sandbox Guide

You run a CVV test transaction by sending a processor-issued test card number to a sandbox endpoint instead of real card data. The sandbox simulates the issuer's response, so you can confirm your form validation, decline handling, and logging without ever touching a live cardholder account.

What a CVV test transaction actually is

A card-not-present authorization can include a card verification value alongside the card number and expiry date. The value is normally the three-digit code on the back of most cards, or the four-digit code on the front of an American Express card. During authorization, the issuer compares the submitted value against what it has on file and returns a result code with the approval or decline.

cvv test transaction vs real transaction

In a test transaction for developers, that comparison never happens at a real issuer. Your payment provider's sandbox stands in for the network and returns a scripted result, which is what makes the flow safe to repeat as often as you need.

The names you will see in documentation

CVV, CVV2, CVC, and CID describe the same concept across different card networks. Your integration only needs to pass whatever field name your provider's API expects.

Why real card numbers do not belong in testing

Testing with a live card moves real cardholder data onto developer machines, CI runners, and log aggregators. That pulls those systems into your PCI DSS scope, and it exposes data you have no business holding. Sensitive authentication data, including the verification value, must not be retained after authorization under PCI DSS rules, so a stray copy in a test log is a compliance problem, not just a bad habit.

Sandbox test numbers solve the problem completely: they are published openly, they cannot be used to move money, and they only work against test endpoints.

Where sandbox test card numbers come from

Every major processor publishes its own set. You cannot mix them across providers, because a Stripe test number will be rejected by an Adyen sandbox and the other way around.

  • The provider's API reference usually lists numbers that approve, numbers that decline, and numbers that fail card verification specifically.
  • Each provider also documents the CVC value to send. Many test numbers accept any three digits, while dedicated test cards exist to force a verification mismatch.
  • Test cards always use a future expiry date, so refresh your fixtures if an old date finally passes.

Running the test, step by step

  1. Create sandbox API keys in your provider's dashboard and confirm test mode is active in the environment you are pointing at.
  2. Pick a test card from the provider's list, plus the CVC value that the documentation associates with it.
  3. Submit the payment through your own checkout form, not through a raw API call, so client-side validation is exercised too.
  4. Record the response code and map it to a user-facing message in your UI.
  5. Repeat with the mismatch card, an invalid length, a blank field, and a non-numeric value.
  6. Search your application logs and database for the submitted value to confirm it is not being persisted anywhere.

Format validation versus actual verification

A client-side check that the code is three or four digits, numeric, and not obviously fake is input hygiene. It stops typos and reduces pointless authorization attempts. It is not verification. Only the issuer can confirm the value matches, which is why a well-built form accepts a passing format check and still handles a decline from the network.

Some teams use a zero-value or small-value authorization to confirm a stored card before a recurring charge. In test mode, that flow is simulated the same way as any other authorization.

Scenarios worth covering before launch

  • Verification match followed by approval.
  • Verification mismatch followed by a decline the customer can retry.
  • Value not processed or unreadable, which the issuer returns when it cannot perform the check.
  • Missing value on a card-not-present transaction, where your risk rules decide the outcome.
  • Three-digit input on a card brand that expects four, and the reverse.
  • Spaces, hyphens, or pasted text pasted into the field.
  • Mobile autofill populating the field, and a retry after a soft decline.

What to log, and what to never log

Store the last four digits of the card, the expiry, the card brand, the authorization result code, and a timestamp. Do not store the full card number or the verification value, and do not let them reach an error tracker or a debugging tool. If your framework logs full request bodies by default, turn that off for payment routes before you run a single test.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Test keys are used in non-production environments only.
  • Every decline path has a distinct, non-technical message for the customer.
  • Request body logging is disabled or redacted on payment endpoints.
  • Test fixtures live in version control, and they contain no real card data.
  • Production credentials are never stored alongside sandbox credentials.

A CVV test transaction is one of the cheapest ways to make sure your checkout fails gracefully. Run it against every scenario above, then confirm that nothing sensitive survived in your logs.
