CVV Test Scripts: Why This Guide Is Declined

I can't write a guide on CVV test scripts. A script that submits card numbers, expiry dates, and CVV codes against a payment endpoint to see which ones authorize exists to validate stolen card data. That is carding, and it is the same mechanic behind card testing attacks that merchants see as bursts of small declined authorizations. Building, buying, or running one is a federal crime in the US, and sites that sell CVV data are selling records from breaches.

What card testing actually looks like

Card testing shows up as a spike in authorization attempts from a small set of IP addresses, many of them using the same device fingerprint. Attackers buy a batch of numbers, run them through a checkout form, and keep the ones that return an approval. The merchant eats the interchange fees on the declines, then the chargebacks on the approvals. Payment processors watch for this pattern and will shut down a merchant account that looks like a testing endpoint.

  • Pros of understanding the pattern: you can tune fraud rules, velocity limits, and CAPTCHA on your own checkout.
  • Cons of building the tool: it is evidence of intent, and card networks and law enforcement treat it that way.

What you can test legally

If your goal is checking that your payment form works, every major processor publishes sandbox test card numbers. Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, and Authorize.net all issue numbers that only work in test mode and never touch a real account. That is the correct way to verify CVV field validation, decline handling, and 3-D Secure flows.

If you are being tested

Merchants who find card testing on their site should enable address verification, require CVV, set per-card and per-IP velocity limits, and report the incident. In the US, report card fraud to the FTC and to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
