Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Scenarios for Checkout: A Practical Guide

CVV test scenarios for checkout: the short answer

Four families cover almost everything: CVV matches, CVV fails, CVV is missing or unreadable, and CVV is never sent because the card, wallet, or transaction type does not carry one. Run all four in a processor sandbox, then assert three things each time: the response code your gateway returns, the order state in your database, and the message the shopper actually sees. If you only check whether the payment failed, you will miss the bugs that cost money.

How CVV validation moves through a checkout

The shopper types three or four digits into a form field. That value should reach your processor, get attached to the authorization message, and be checked by the issuer at the moment of authorization. What comes back is a single letter, and that letter is where your test assertions should live.

The response codes you will see

  • M for match. The issuer compared the value to what it holds on file and it agrees.
  • N for no match. Wrong digits. This is the classic decline you are trying to trigger.
  • P for not processed. The request never made it to the verification step.
  • U for unknown. Issuer does not participate, or the data was not available at that moment.
  • S for should have been present. The issuer expected a CVV and your request did not carry one.
  • X for unavailable. Common on some debit and international cards.

Most processors publish test card numbers that force a specific letter, so you are not guessing. Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, and Authorize.Net all keep a test card table in their docs. Pull the numbers from whichever one you use and pin them in a fixture file.

The scenarios worth automating

  • CVV match with a valid expiry and a sufficient balance. Your happy path.
  • CVV mismatch on an otherwise good card. Payment should decline, the order should stay unpaid, and the customer should be told to recheck the security code rather than that their card is bad.
  • CVV missing entirely. The field is empty, or your client-side validation strips it. Confirm you get a clean validation error before you ever hit the network.
  • CVV wrong length. Two digits, five digits, letters, whitespace pasted from a spreadsheet.
  • Amex CID. Four digits on the front, not three on the back. Your input mask and your help text both need to handle this.
  • Expired card with a matched CVV. The CVV check should not mask the expiry decline.
  • CVV match on a card the issuer blocks for another reason, such as a stolen-card flag. Confirms your decline mapping is not keyed to CVV alone.

Edge cases people forget

Stored credentials break naive forms. When you charge a returning customer with a saved card on a merchant-initiated transaction, you are not supposed to resubmit the CVV, which means any rule that says "CVV required" will fail a perfectly valid charge. Wallets behave the same way. Apple Pay and Google Pay return a network token or cryptogram, and there is no CVV field in that flow at all, so your validation has to allow an empty value when a token is present.

CVV Test Cases for Payment Forms: Sandbox Values and Validation Checks

Debit routing is another one. Some networks do not return CVV data for PINless or certain regional transactions, and you will see X or P instead of M. Retry logic matters too. Hammering the issuer with the same bad code in a tight loop invites velocity rules and soft blocks on your merchant account.

Test data hygiene

Never run these scenarios with a real card number, even your own, unless you enjoy scope creep. Use sandbox PANs only. The PCI Data Security Standard treats the CVV as Sensitive Authentication Data, which cannot be stored after authorization, encrypted or not. That means no CVV in your database, no CVV in application logs, no CVV in your analytics events, no CVV in a support ticket screenshot. Mask it in anything that leaves the request path, and tokenize on the client if your processor supports it.

How I sequence a run

Happy path first, so I know the pipe works. Then each decline code in isolation. Then combinations: bad CVV plus bad postcode, bad CVV plus a 3-D Secure challenge, bad CVV on a repeat attempt with the same card. After that I check the boring stuff, which is where the real failures hide: the order status, the gateway transaction record, the email the customer gets, and the webhook your fulfillment system consumes. A checkout can show the right error on screen and still mark an order as paid in the back office.

Last step is load. Fire a few hundred mismatched CVVs at the sandbox and watch your error rates, your logging volume, and your support queue logic. Decline storms are real, and you want to know how your system behaves before one finds you in production.
