CVV Test Scenarios: Sandbox CVV Checks Explained

What a CVV test scenario is

A CVV test scenario is a sandbox case that checks how a payment integration reacts to a card verification value result. The test runs against test card numbers issued by a processor. It does not touch a live card account. Results cover four outcomes: match, mismatch, not provided, and not supported.

CVV response codes

Card networks return a single-letter code with the authorization message.

  • M: CVV match.
  • N: CVV mismatch.
  • P: CVV not processed.
  • S: card should have had a CVV, but the merchant sent none.
  • U: issuer does not support CVV verification.
  • I: not applicable. Some gateways add this code.

A blank field in the response means no code came back. Treat it as unknown, not as a pass.

Test values in sandbox

Test CVV values differ by processor. Stripe test cards accept any three-digit CVC unless the test case needs a decline. Other gateways map a fixed value to a mismatch, for example 999 or 000. Braintree sandbox documents its own values per response code. There is no cross-processor standard for test CVV digits. Read the gateway docs for the exact number before you write a test.

Scenarios to cover

  1. CVV match with a full authorization.
  2. CVV mismatch with a hold and a manual review queue.
  3. CVV field not collected, common on card-not-present flows.
  4. Issuer returns U because it does not verify CVV.
  5. Bad input: empty field, two digits, five digits, letters, spaces.
  6. American Express CID, which is four digits and sits on the front of the card.
  7. Retry after a mismatch, and the rule that stops the retry.
  8. A gateway timeout where the CVV result never arrives.

Rules on storing CVV

PCI DSS requirement 3.2 bars storage of sensitive authentication data after authorization. CVV, full track data, and PIN blocks fall in that group. A system that writes the CVV field to a debug log fails the requirement. Test logs need the same scrubbing as live logs. Mask the field at input, keep it in memory for the authorization call, then drop it.

Checklist

  • Confirm the sandbox CVV values against vendor docs for the account version in use.
  • Assert the response code, not just the approval status.
  • Test each code path in the order logic, since a mismatch may route to review rather than decline.
  • Verify the CVV never lands in logs, error traces, or the database.
  • Re-run the suite after a gateway API version change.
